As Sochi Olympics go on, Russian general says U.S. 'at war' over Ukraine
February 11, 2014
While the Sochi Olympics are under way next door, international tensions are rising in Ukraine, with a Russian general firing a verbal shot at the United States.
"I assume that the Foreign Ministry understands we are at war," Gen. Leonid Ivashov told km.ru.
The former foreign relations head of the Russian Ministry of Defense and current president of the Academy of Geopolitical Studies, spoke as the U.S. House of Representatives approved a resolution supporting the Ukraine protesters.
The 383-2 vote on House Resolution 447 Monday evening proclaimed formal support for the demonstrators and for Ukraine's entry into the European Union -- a provocation to Russia's regional interests.
Ivashov said, "Apparently, [officials of the EU and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry] have dedicated themselves to deeply and thoroughly studying the doctrine of [Nazi propagandist] Dr. Goebbels.
"They present everything backwards from reality. They accuse the party that is defending itself, of aggression.
"What we are seeing in Ukraine and in Syria is a western project, a new kind of war. In both places you see a clear anti-Russian approach, and as is well known, wars today begin with psychological and information warfare operations, Ivashov stated.
``I assume that the Foreign Ministry understands that we are at war, and that wars have their laws.
"After the information war, they are preparing a land and sea in Ukraine. Kerry and [President Barack] Obama are encouraging in Kiev what they harshly repress in their country. European leaders break up unauthorized demonstrations with hoses, throwing demonstrators in jail, while in the Ukrainian case they do the exact opposite, and on top of that they threaten Russia.
"Logically, this is part of information warfare."
Ivashov reported that "under the cover of information commotion, U.S. ships are entering the Black Sea, that is, near Ukraine. They are sending marine infantry, and they have also begun to deploy more tanks in Europe."
The general concluded that the West's objectives include "driving Ukraine to the breaking point, and blaming [Ukraine President] Yanukovich and Russia for everything.
"Then they wil say that NATO can't simply sit by as a mere spectator an then send its troops into to return order. Then a transitional government would be formed, as happened in Iraq and Kosovo, and NATO would take control of everything."
"Historical experience shows we have lived through similar situations," Ivashov said. "The main thing is for [the West] to take power, and destroy the Ukrainian state."

But Jay-Z said this week their friendship also plays out on the small screen–a very small screen. In an interview with New York radio station Hot97, the rapper confirmed that he and Obama exchange text messages.
"Yeah, I've spoken to him on the phone and had texts from Obama, of course," he said Wednesday.
Jay-Z stopped himself and quickly expressed regret for saying "of course," acknowledging the term may sound arrogant.
"Yes, that's happened," he continued, referring to the text messages.
The song writer and designer said Obama is "a regular guy" who uses a lot of sports analogies.
"I don't know if this is like breaching national security, but he was like–when he was getting elected the second time–he was like 'Hey, you know, fourth quarter, just give me the ball.' I said 'word'."
That conversation, Jay-Z added, happened in Cleveland when he performed at a rally for Obama shortly before Election Day.
He further admitted he gets a little star struck around the president, a big admission for one of the most successful musical artists in the country.
Jay-Z has previously hinted that he uses SMS with the president. In his 2009 song, "On to the Next One," the rapper mentions that he chills with Oprah "in the projects" and has Obama "on the text."
Obama's relationship with the power couple also made headlines this year when Jay-Z rapped that the White House–rather than the Treasury Department–gave him and Beyoncé approval for their high-profile trip to Cuba.
In an unusual White House press briefing, Obama's chief spokesman, Jay Carney, was asked about the lyrics.
But Carney sharply denied that the White House gave the couple clearance for their travel.
"I guess nothing rhymes with Treasury," Carney said.
The bonds between the rapper and the president go back at least as far as the 2008 campaign, when candidate Obama said the way to handle political mudslinging was by brushing one's shoulders off – mimicking Jay-Z's trademark move. Jay-Z's hits shuffle on Obama's iPod, he said in July 2010 – alongside the likes of crooner Frank Sinatra and opera great Maria Callas. The couple also visited the White House earlier that year, and their VIP tour included a stop inside the Situation Room.
