BREAKING: IRS Caves, Will Surrender ALL of Lois Lerner’s Emails
Apparently activism works.
While an online petition calls for the arrest of embattled IRS official Lois Lerner, the House passes a resolution calling on the Department of Justice to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate IRS targeting of conservative groups, and the House—including some Democrats—votes to hold Lerner in contemptor refusing to testify, the IRS has agreed to quit stonewalling and turn over all of Lerner’s emails.
A “smoking gun” email surfaced last month that showed Lerner and the Department of Justice were in contact on whether DOJ could prosecute groups seeking tax exempt status if they “lied” on their applications.
Lerner had testified in a DOJ hearing—although it was not open to the public—but twice refused to talk to the House Oversight Committee, invoking her Fifth Amendment rights. It took more activism—a Freedom of Information Act request from Judicial Watch—to get the Lerner-DOJ emails.
Via Townhall:
IRS officials have agreed to turn over all emails belonging to former head of tax exempt groups Lois Lerner as the Congressional probe into improper targeting of conservative groups by the agency gets deeper. Earlier this week Republicans and Democrats in the House voted to hold Lerner in contempt after her repeated refusal to testify in front of Congress. Lerner has given closed door testimony to the Department of Justice, but plead the Fifth twice in front of the House Oversight Committee.IRS targeting of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status should be a concern for everyone regardless of which side of the aisle they stand. The Obama administration has shown time and again its willingness to withhold documents requested by Congress.
Last month, emails surfaced showing Lerner was in contact with the Department of Justice about the possible criminal prosecution of conservative groups. Emails also showed Lerner was in contact with the staff of Oversight Committee Ranking Member Elijah Cummings about the voter fraud prevention group True the Vote. Cummings had denied in the Congressional record any contact between himself or his staff with the IRS about the group.
