Border war heats up: Border Patrol dodges .50-caliber slugs from Mexican thugs

A Mexican smuggling cartel flexed its muscles on an overburdened U.S. Border Patrol group Friday night, firing .50-caliber machine gun bullets at them from the south side of the beleaguered border. The incident occurred in the Rincon Peninsula area of the Rio Grande about 8:30 p.m., Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert told Fox News.
The outspoken Republican, who was inspecting the region first-hand and who has been a severe critic of the president’s failure to secure the 2,000-mile border, said, “We don’t have any armor that can stop a .50-caliber round, so our Border Patrol agents had to take cover when the rounds were ricocheting around them.”
“When the shooting stopped, about 40 to 50 people came out on the U.S. side and turned themselves in,” he continued. “So clearly the rounds were being fired to suppress every effort to stop anybody intervening with anyone or anything coming across.”
Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been demanding President Obama send in the National Guard to bolster the thinly stretched patrol officers, and this violent outbreak could stiffen his resolve.
“I don’t know why we’re out here like sitting ducks,” said one Border Patrol agent. “We need help.”
Scores of incidents have occurred during the tidal wave of Central American illegals entering the country, expected to hit 90,000 by September. The unabated surge has enabled cartels to brazenly ramp up their activities, while Border Patrol agents remain focused on the humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, calls by private citizens to form militias continue to build. They might be the only viable solution to a feckless president who shows no backbone for enforcing the law.
