A Senate debate between pro-amnesty Democrats and Republicans who favor a secure border continued Thursday when Majority Leader Harry Reid trashed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s latest proposal.

The Texas Republican is pushing a bill that would end the de facto amnesty Barack Obama extended in 2012 to illegals who arrived in the U.S. as minors.
While Obama’s unilateral move resulted in deferred action in the case of illegals under a certain age who crossed the border as a child and maintained certain requirements while living in the U.S., Cruz contended that this policy has attracted the tens of thousands of Central American minors currently flooding the Mexican border.
In his response, Reid suggested that the executive order automatically legitimized these illegals, making them impervious to deportation efforts.

“Before Republicans help our Border Patrol agents and all the personnel trying to do something to handle this humanitarian crisis,” he said from the Senate floor, “they want President Obama to deport the Dreamers who are already here – legitimately here.”
Obama has requested nearly $4 billion in funding to address the border crisis; however, critics say that money would not be spent on addressing the root causes of the illegal immigration surge.
Cruz has railed against Obama’s request, calling for GOP opposition without some guarantee that deportations of those already here illegally will be expedited.
Reid suggested Cruz and like-minded Republicans are an impediment to actual progress in securing the border, describing his position as “we’re not going to do this unless we deport all these children who came here before – the so-called Dreamers.”
He concluded that the GOP is “providing no substantial solutions” to the problem.
Cruz refuted that claim in a press release indicating that his motivation is to ensure children hoping to find amnesty are not subjected to the dangerous and often violent prospect of illegally crossing the U.S. border.

“The staggering condition s that children are being subjected to are a direct result of the amnesty that President Obama illegally and unilaterally enacted in 2012,” Cruz explained, “which caused the number of unaccompanied minors to skyrocket. The only way to stop the border crisis is to stop President Obama’s amnesty. If we do not put an end to its expansion – to the promise of amnesty that is the reason so many are coming – then more little boys and girls will be trafficked, abused, and even killed. We have an obligation to make sure that not one more child is hurt by this president’s lawlessness.”
