Merkel toughens up

Frustrated with Putin, Germany and its chancellor may be tiring of Ostpolitik

German chancellor Angela Merkel
ANGELA Merkel (pictured) is a disciplined and cautious public speaker. So when she makes statements that seem fired by passion and resolve, it is good to take note. If those statements prompt her foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to urge a softer tone, something big probably happened.
So it did in Sydney, Australia, on November 17th, when Mrs Merkel talked at the Lowy Institute for International Policy. Her main subject was the aggression of Russia’s Vladimir Putin in Ukraine. At the G20 summit, Mrs Merkel had just met with Mr Putin for hours in what appears to have been another frustrating exchange. Mrs Merkel reiterated her assurances, mainly directed at the pacifists in her German home audience, that there can be no military solution to the conflict. (Germany’s allies in the Baltics and Poland are less sure about that.) But, she added, that does not mean that the West cannot respond resolutely in other ways, above all economically.

In particular, Mrs Merkel stated more clearly than ever her fears that the conflict could spread and become a “wider conflagration”. It is not just about Ukraine, she elaborated, but “about Moldova, about Georgia. If this continues, we must wonder: Do we have to ask [Putin] when it comes to Serbia, ask when it’s about the western Balkans? We cannot reconcile this with our values.”
Mr Putin’s aggression and cynical double-talk do indeed challenge Germany’s most basic assumptions. Postwar, post-reunification, postmodern Germany has learned to live by rules and norms. Among the highest such rules is the sanctity of modern borders. (One of the first things that Helmut Kohl, a former chancellor, did after the Berlin Wall fell 25 years ago was to reassure Poland that Germany would forever recognise the Oder-Neisse border. This, among other gestures, made reunification possible.) Mr Putin, by contrast, “tramples on international law,” Mrs Merkel said.
Such clarity frightens many Germans, including many of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) who govern in coalition with Mrs Merkel’s Christian Democrats. Since the first SPD chancellor, Willy Brandt, in the early 1970s, they have subscribed to Ostpolitik—a policy of openness toward (and indefatigable dialogue with) the east, including the Soviet Union and now Russia. They credit this approach for bringing down the Iron Curtain, while Americans credit the toughness of Ronald Reagan.
Several leading Social Democrats reacted nervously to Mrs Merkel’s statements in Australia. Matthias Platzeck, a former governor of Brandenburg, urged the West to stay on its “course of partnership” with Russia. (One may wonder how he defines partnership.) Sigmar Gabriel, the SPD’s boss, backed him, saying that “the West must continue to talk to Putin” (which Mrs Merkel would hardly disagree with). And Mr Steinmeier, her foreign minister, called for prudence in the choice of words. Rather abruptly, he was this week invited to the Kremlin for a meeting with Mr Putin.
Mr Putin was a KGB agent in Dresden when the Berlin Wall fell, and speaks fluent German. He is well aware of the rift in German sympathies and philosophies. On November 16th, German public television aired an exclusive interview with him in which he mixed charm, half-truths and fabrication to try to seduce the German public. He has understood that Germany may be the key country in the Western alliances, both NATO and the European Union, and Mrs Merkel the key leader.
She, like Germany’s president, Joachim Gauck, is from what used to be East Germany. She speaks Russian and is said to know Mr Putin better than any other Western leader does. Until now, Mr Gauck, who has a largely ceremonial office, has been the one talking tough about Mr Putin. If Mrs Merkel now adopts more of that tone, Mr Putin will find it harder to drive a wedge between Germany's aversion to conflict and its commitment to rules and norms. Even Germany's willingness to talk ultimately has its limits.

CHICAGO – A graphic sexual education curriculum meant for Chicago Public Schools’ (CPS) fifth and sixth graders shocked parents during a presentation given during “report card pickup” at the Andrew Jackson Language Academy.

cps6-300x194The presentation included slides that are clearly not age appropriate, and include “demonstrations” of applying male and female condoms (FC), DNAinfo reports.
While CPS spokesman Bill McCaffrey said in a statement that the “objectionable material presented at Andrew Jackson Language Academy this week is not and never was part of the student sexual education curriculum” as reported at the local NBC affiliate, the slides shown to parents are also posted at Waters Elementary School as part of the “Sexual Health Education” curriculum for “Grade 6.”
Links to K-8 sex ed lessons can be found here. It should be noted that Waters elementary indicates that they “opted out” of the condom demonstrations, which adds to speculation that the demonstrations were indeed a part of the curriculum.
Fifth and sixth graders are also assured that the “morning after pill” is “NOT an abortion pill,” and that “Youth 12 years of age or older can receive sexual health and reproductive services without parental consent.”
The female condom seems to be particularly relevant to the presentation, as there are a considerable number of slides dedicated to this particular form of birth control.
Some of the praise lavished on the FC is that it can be inserted “hours before vaginal sex, so you don’t have to interrupt foreplay to be safe!” The FC, according to the presentation, is great for “Women, men, transgender folk,” and you can use if you are “gay” or “straight.”

Obama Poised to Announce Go-it-Alone Plan on Immigration Thursday

Obama Poised to Announce Go-it-Alone Plan on Immigration Thursday

BY:

By Steve Holland and Richard Cowan
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama is set on Thursday to outline a controversial plan to relax U.S. immigration policy and grant relief from deportation to as many as 5 million undocumented immigrants in a go-it-alone move that will deepen a partisan divide with Republicans.
Sources close to the administration said the rollout would include a televised speech by Obama on Thursday night laying out the plan followed by a trip to Las Vegas on Friday to build support. Nevada is home to the highest proportion of undocumented immigrants in the country.
The White House declined to comment on the specific timing of the announcement but officials have made clear Obama was planning to take executive action soon. Some conservative Republicans have threatened to try to thwart the immigration move by imposing funding restrictions in a must-pass spending bill, which could conceivably raise the possibility of a government shutdown.
Frustrated by years of congressional inaction on what most in Washington agree is a broken immigration system, Obama is planning to issue a reprieve from deportation that will cover some parents of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents.
That initiative would expand on a 2012 executive order by the president that gave relief from deportation and work permits to undocumented children brought to the United States by their parents.
There is also expected to be a border security element and Obama will act to help companies hire and retain high-skilled workers from abroad, the sources said.
“We’ve identified a number of ways that we will (fix the system) which the president will speak to in the coming days,” Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said at a National Press Club event on Wednesday.
Obama’s move, coming little more than two weeks after elections in which Republicans seized the Senate, is certain to provoke a backlash and House of Representatives Republicans are weighing a range of responses.
Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, said in a statement: “If ‘Emperor Obama’ ignores the American people and announces an amnesty plan that he himself has said over and over again exceeds his constitutional authority, he will cement his legacy of lawlessness and ruin the chances for congressional action on this issue and many others.”

An Iowa man was arrested Wednesday after Secret Service officers found a rifle, ammunition and a knife in his car near the White House.
The Secret Service confirmed to Fox News that 41-year-old R.J. Kapheim of Davenport, Iowa was taken into custody and charged with possessing an unregistered firearm.
According to the Secret Service, Kapheim approached officers a little after noon on Wednesday near the White House. He told the officers that “someone” from Iowa had told him to travel to the White House so he had driven there.
When officers located his vehicle they found a 30-30 rifle with ammunition, at least 40 rounds, and a 6-inch fixed-blade knife.
The Secret Service said additional charges against Kapheim are pending.
The incident follows a series of high-profile security on the White House grounds, including the arrest of an intruder in September.

URGENT: Here’s the Taunting Threat Obama Just Issued to the GOP

URGENT: Here’s the Taunting Threat Obama Just Issued to the GOP

President Barack Obama is becoming dangerously disconnected from reality, completely ignoring the resounding message sent to him by the American electorate on election day.
Despite a voter repudiation of his radical progressive agenda, Obama is vowing to push ahead with energy sector killing and private property violating climate change regulations.

Click here to get a FREE subscription to the Conservative Tribune. Obama’s administration isn’t being shy about what they are doing either, taunting the new GOP leadership by calling them powerless to stop their global warming rules, according to the Washington Times.
A Presidential task force unveiled a report containing numerous recommendations for “climate preparedness and resilience” projects that are estimated to cost the government over $100 billion.
Even though the Supreme Court has already struck down some of the new overreaching EPA regulations, and the administration is currently being sued over other global warming rules, Obama’s White House feels that Republicans won’t be able to do much to stop them from pushing through new regulations aimed at climate change.

“I believe the president will complete actions. It is a top priority of his and I don’t believe they can stop us,” White House counselor John Podesta told reporters on a conference call Monday. “Not withstanding Sen. McConnell making this a top priority to leave the status quo, to leave the air dirtier.”
The task force recommendations are in addition to a one-sided deal with China that Obama agreed to, which cuts U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by an additional 26%, while China has merely promised to look at capping their emissions no later than 2030.
On top of that, Obama is also demanding a $3 billion “global climate fund”, which will redistribute American taxpayer dollars to developing nations to help them build more infrastructure.
Mitch McConnell, for his part, has vowed to make fighting Obama’s “global warming” agenda a top priority of the new Republican-led Congress, telling a crowd in Kentucky that, “They’ve been on a rampage all across the country. And I think coal is the most conspicuous example, but it’s happening in a lot of other areas and I think you’re going to see bipartisan support for trying to rein them in.”
The White House certainly appears to feel cocky about their climate regulations, but it isn’t because they are saving the environment or anything noble like that.  These rules and regulations serve little purpose other than to create further drag on our economy, particularly the energy sector.
Global warming is based off of unsettled “pseudo-science,” despite the liberals screaming that the “debate is over.”  Any move by the administration aimed towards dealing with global climate change is just a socialistic redistributive move designed to undercut America on the international stage.
Please share this on Facebook and Twitter if you think that the Republican Congress needs to do everything in its power to stop and rollback Obama’s leftist “global warming” agenda.

VIDEO: The Massive Ferguson Conspiracy Just Got Blown Wide Open [WATCH]

VIDEO: The Massive Ferguson Conspiracy Just Got Blown Wide Open [WATCH]

If you’ve been thinking that the racial tension in Ferguson, Mo. has been seemingly manufactured out of thin air by people who stand to benefit from it, well, you’re not the only one.
The collusion between race hustlers trying to make something out of nothing has never been a secret, but this video by conservative blogger Bill Whittle puts the narrative together perhaps better than any other source I’ve seen.

Click here to get a FREE subscription to the Conservative Tribune. “Let’s just be crystal clear about something,” Whittle begins. “If it turns out that a police officer shot Michael Brown while he was standing still with his hands in the air as his defenders claim then that police officer needs to be charged with murder and go to jail for the rest of his life.”
“But that doesn’t seem to be like what happened at all.”
“I’m not going to speculate on how Michael Brown’s life actually came to an end, but I am going to talk about what happened before and after.”

Whittle then addresses the media narrative about Michael Brown’s harmlessness.  [H/T TPNN.]
“Michael Brown has been repeatedly referred to in the media as a ‘gentle giant.’ Here’s surveillance video of the gentle giant taken a short time before the shooting stealing a handful of cigars and then gently strong-arming the store owner out of his way,” Whittle comments over footage of Brown’s store robbery.
“So why is it that the attorney general appointed by the President of the United States of America put intense political pressure on the Ferguson police department to suppress this standard, ordinary surveillance video – a video which, by the way, caused the destruction of this man’s store and left him fearing for his life?”
The video then goes on to ask whether there is – as protesters claim – an epidemic of white-on-black crime.

“If this is an epidemic,” Whittle says, “Where’s the epidemic?”
Whittle points out that there is an epidemic of racial violence – but not the way the media spins it.
“The National Crime Victimization Survey reported approximately 13,000 black-on-white rapes and 39,000 black-on-white robberies.”
“The statistics show that the number of white-on-black rapes and violent robberies were so small that they had to be rounded to the nearest whole number – and that whole number is zero.”
Whittle blames figures like President Obama and Attorney General Holder for the racial division.
“Open racism is simply not tolerated in white America today, but black racism is the toxic glue that holds the progressive coalition together,” Whittle concludes.
Please like and share on Facebook and Twitter if you believe the media is parroting the administration’s false narrative on Ferguson.
