The U.S. State Department recommended Americans in Libya “depart immediately,” in its latest travel warning on Tuesday.
The warning comes amid worsening unrest in Libya, where militia battles have plunged the country into chaos.
“Due to security concerns, the Department of State has limited staffing at Embassy Tripoli and is only able to offer very limited emergency services to U.S. citizens in Libya,” the travel warning said.
“Because of the presumption that foreigners, especially US citizens, in Libya may be associated with the US government or US NGOs, travelers should be aware that they may be targeted for kidnapping, violent attacks, or death,” it added.
“U.S. citizens currently in Libya should exercise extreme caution and depart immediately,” it said.
Earlier Tuesday, the United States announced it was deploying an amphibious assault ship with about 1,000 marines off the coast of Libya in case the US embassy must be evacuated.
The USS Bataan was to be in the area “in a matter of days,” said a defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, adding it was a “precautionary” measure.
In addition to the 1,000 marines on board, the Bataan is equipped with several helicopters.
The United States also has available 250 marines, seven tilt-rotor Osprey aircraft and three refueling aircraft in Sigonella, Italy.
The precautions come amid ongoing controversy over a September 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi in which four Americans, including ambassador Christopher Stevens, were killed.

CNN declares Michelle Obama has power to sign bills into law

CNN declares Michelle Obama has power to sign bills into law

Posted on May 27, 2014 by Joe Newby
costelloAs First Lady, Michelle Obama has no authority to approve or sign legislation, although there is no doubt she has a certain amount of influence over her husband.
But it seems CNN isn’t aware of that basic fact, for Carol Costello announced — with a straight face, no less — that Mrs. Obama signed a piece of legislation into law.

“We can all agree that in the wealthiest nation on earth all children should have the basic nutrition they need to learn and grow and to pursue their dreams because in the end nothing is more important than the health and well-being of our children. Nothing. And our hopes for their future should drive every single decision that we make,” Obama said in a video clip played by Costello.
She then declared (emphasis added):
That was Mrs. Obama back in 2010 when she signed the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act into law. Well now some members of Congress and the food industry want to roll back that initiative and loosen requirements to cut costs. Today the First Lady takes the unusual step of delivering White House remarks speaking out against that House measure and in another twist, a one-time ally of Mrs. Obama’s initiative is now a critic.
There’s only one problem — Michelle Obama doesn’t have that authority.  At least not yet…
You’d think the wizards of smart at CNN would know this, but apparently they don’t.

EXCLUSIVE: Edward Snowden Tells Brian Williams: 'I Was Trained as a Spy'

EXCLUSIVE: Edward Snowden Tells Brian Williams: 'I Was Trained as a Spy'

By Erin McClam
advertisment
Edward Snowden, in an exclusive interview with "Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams, is fighting back against critics who dismissed him as a low-level hacker — saying he was “trained as a spy” and offered technical expertise to high levels of government.
Snowden defended his expertise in portions of the interview that aired at 6:30 p.m. ET on Nightly News. The extended, wide-ranging interview with Williams, his first with a U.S. television network, airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
“I was trained as a spy in sort of the traditional sense of the word, in that I lived and worked undercover overseas — pretending to work in a job that I’m not — and even being assigned a name that was not mine,” Snowden said in the interview.

Exclusive: Edward Snowden Defends ‘Totality’ of His Expertise

Nightly News
Snowden described himself as a technical expert who has worked for the United States at high levels, including as a lecturer in a counterintelligence academy for the Defense Intelligence Agency and undercover work for the CIA and National Security Agency.
“But I am a technical specialist. I am a technical expert,” he said. “I don’t work with people. I don’t recruit agents. What I do is I put systems to work for the United States. And I’ve done that at all levels from — from the bottom on the ground all the way to the top.”
Last year, when Snowden began leaking details of NSA spying programs and left the country, administration officials played down his work history, using descriptions such as “systems administrator” to describe his role at the agency. In June, President Barack Obama himself told reporters: “No, I’m not going to be scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old hacker.”
Snowden told Williams that those terms were “misleading.”
In the Defense Intelligence Agency job, Snowden said, he “developed sources and methods for keeping our information and people secure in the most hostile and dangerous environments around the world.”
“So when they say I’m a low-level systems administrator, that I don’t know what I’m talking about, I’d say it’s somewhat misleading,” he said.

Reality Check: What Was Edward Snowden’s True Impact?

Nightly News
The Defense Intelligence Agency confirmed to NBC News that Snowden, as a contractor, had spoken at three of their conferences. Two intelligence sources tell NBC that Snowden worked for the CIA at an overseas station in IT and communications.
The CIA declined to comment on Snowden’s employment or his role at the agency, instead referring to the testimony of Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, specifically his statement before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence in January of this year:
“Snowden claims that he’s won and that his mission is accomplished. If that is so, I call on him and his accomplices to facilitate the return of the remaining stolen documents that have not yet been exposed, to prevent even more damage to U.S. security.”
The NBC News interview was conducted last week in Moscow after months of preparation. Russia has granted Snowden temporary asylum.
Williams has described the interview as “months in the making and cloaked in the secrecy of his life as a fugitive living in exile overseas.”
Snowden, now 30, left the government and later worked later worked for private intelligence contractors inside NSA outposts, including in Japan and Hawaii.
Edward Snowden: A Timeline
Weigh in on whether you view Snowden as a #Patriot or a #Traitor.
While working for the contractors, he downloaded up to 1.7 million secret documents about U.S. intelligence-gathering and partnerships with foreign allies, according to U.S. officials, including some that revealed the extent of data collection from U.S. telephone records and Internet activity.
The United States charged him with espionage and revoked his passport. Snowden flew to Moscow but was unable to continue to Latin America because he no longer had a passport.
Among the revelations in the documents taken by Snowden was the NSA’s bulk collection of phone and Internet metadata from U.S. users, spying on personal communications of foreign leaders, and the NSA’s ability to tap undersea fiber-optic cables and siphon data.
Snowden documents also were the basis for three exclusive NBC News digital reports, on Jan. 27, Feb. 4 and Feb. 7, as well as a report on Nightly News, documenting operations by British cyber spies to monitor YouTube and other social media services and to use an array of “dirty tricks” against nations, hackers, terror groups, suspected criminals and arms dealers.
Obama appointed a review board that criticized the domestic data collection. In March the president recommended ending bulk domestic metadata collection, and last week the House passed a bill to end it.
NBC News' Robert Windrem contributed to this report.

State Dept. tweets link to radical Muslim cleric. When does this become treasonous?

BinBayyah
Last week, we reported on the Clarion Project’s detail of the Obama administration’s lies regarding their involvement with the Muslim Brotherhood.
Now, the Washington Free Beacon reveals that the State Department’s Counter Terrorism (CT) Bureau promoted on Friday a radical Muslim cleric whose organization has reportedly backed Hamas and endorsed a fatwa authorizing the murder of U.S. soldiers in Iraq.
The CT bureau on Friday tweeted out a link to the official website of Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah, the vice president of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), a controversial organization founded by a Muslim Brotherhood leader “who has called for the death of Jews and Americans and himself is banned from visiting the U.S.” The tweet has since been removed, but here’s how it appeared:
state_tweet
Folks, I’m sorry to keep saying this, but you just cannot make this stuff up. And I have to ask, when does it become treasonous, this aiding and abetting the enemy?
Of course it was the same Muslim cleric bin Bayyah who was granted a meeting in June 2013 in the Obama White House with top-level national security council members. He was confirmed to have met with members of Obama’s National Security Council at the White House to discuss poverty and global health efforts.
Bin Bayyah is reported to have been one of several clerics who endorsed a 2004 fatwa that endorsed resistance against Americans fighting in Iraq.
The CT Bureau tweet linked to a press release on Bin Bayyah’s site condemning the kidnapping of hundreds of Nigerian girls by the Boko Haram group. However, Bin Bayyah himself has been known to back controversial causes. Bin Bayyah has ‘urged the U.N. to criminalize blasphemy,’ according to reports, and spoke ‘out in favor of Hamas,’ the terror group that rules over the West Bank. The cleric also issued a fatwa in 2009 ‘barring ‘all forms of normalization’ with Israel,’ according to Fox news.
My question is simple, is the Obama administration so lacking in character that it will join arms with anyone? I can see no reason for the US State Department to retweet anything from a radical Islamic cleric or invite him into the White House. Am I missing something?
The Free Beacon reports that terrorism analyst Patrick Poole said the State Department must more carefully choose the Muslim leaders it promotes. Gee, ya think?
“This administration is continuing to push extremist clerics like Bin Bayyah as part of a fantasy foreign policy that somehow they are somehow a counter to al Qaeda,” Poole said. “But in Bin Bayyah’s case, it was his organization that issued the fatwa allowing for the killing of U.S. soldiers in Iraq and said it was a duty for Muslims all over the world to support the Iraqi ‘resistance’ against the United States that gave religious justification for al Qaeda’s terrorism. “And [Bin Bayyah] said nothing as his pal Qaradawi issued fatwas authorizing the use of suicide bombings and publicly defended terrorist groups like Hamas, Hezbollah and Palestinian Islamic Jihad,” Poole added. “If anything, clerics like Bin Bayyah and [Yusuf] Qaradawi have actively aided al Qaeda.”
Yusuf Qaradawi, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood leader who founded the IUMS—where Bin Bayyah served as vice president—has been called a “theologian of terror” by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). And what percentage of the Jewish community voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012?
Oh well, if you’re Barack Hussein Obama, you can do no wrong and you’re never held accountable or responsible — and he knows that. So when does it become treason? Or it is just acceptable behavior?
