Experimental approach designed to freeze ground to prevent further groundwater contamination.
An official at the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant demonstrates an experimental ice wall aimed at blocking groundwater from seeping into the reactor buildings on May 16. (Photo: KYODO)Japan's nuclear regulatory agency has given final approval for TEPCO, the owner of the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, to build its controversial "ice wall" as a way to mitigate further groundwater contamination at the site.

In the planning stages for well over a year, the idea for an ice wall may seem outrageous, but TEPCO has continued to push the proposal as the best way to keep additional water from seeping into the area around the plant and adding to the already enormous amount of contaminated water accumulating there.
According to the Japan Times:
The frozen wall, to be set up around the buildings housing reactors 1 to 4, is seen as an important step in addressing the buildup of radioactive water at the complex. The project is funded by the government.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority has been wary of ground subsidence around reactor and adjacent turbine buildings that could occur in implementing the project, but accepted Tepco’s explanation Monday that any sinking would not be significant enough to undermine safety.
A Tepco official told NRA members and experts that the ground may sink up to 16 mm at some points, but concluded that the utility believes there is no problem in regards to the stability of the ground.
After hearing the explanation, NRA Commissioner Toyoshi Fuketa said: “I think we have been able to confirm today the scale of ground sinking, which is what we have most feared as side effects of building the wall.”
And Ubergizmo adds:
It merits mentioning here that similar techniques have been used in the past but not at such a massive scale. Construction begins next month when engineers will start work on the 0.9-mile ice wall which should help contain the leakage of radioactive water.
What engineers will basically do is drive vertical pipes spaced a meter apart between 20 and 40 meters into the ground. A coolant will then be pumped through the pipes which would create a barrier of permafrost, acting as a physical barrier between groundwater and contaminated water.
Even though TEPCO has received the go ahead for this project it might be required to review other parts of this project as work goes on. Engineers will have to carefully monitor existing infrastructure such as utilities and drains given that there are concerns about the ice wall affecting them.

If Lierre Keith had her way, there would be no white people, and all men would be eradicated from the earth, according to a video posted to YouTube on Sunday by Daylight Disinfectant. Keith, Daylight Disinfectant said, is a radical feminist with an organization called "Deep Green Resistance" who made her opinions known at something called the “Radfems Respond” conference held at the Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon.
"Radical feminists are critical of gender itself. We are not gender reformists - we are gender abolitionists," said literature handed out by Keith. "Without the socially constructed gender roles that form the basis of patriarchy, all people would be free to dress, behave and love others in whatever way they wished, no matter what kind of body they had."
According to its website, Deep Green Resistance encourages men to "fail at masculinity," claiming that is the "only hope" for planet Earth.
During her speech, Keith said lesbians are seen as role models in her version of reality, and falsely claimed "right-wing" people on school boards are preventing the teaching of science in classrooms.
"In the world I picture, lesbians are not rarely valued and prioritized but are seen as role models," she added.
She also argued that the "sex class men is simply male privilege and gender identity and it needs to be abolished if women are ever to be free."
Keith, however, was just getting started, finishing her speech with a call for the end of masculinity, religion and economics.
"Liberty and a living planet will only be won when masculinity, its religion, its economics, it's psychology and its sex is resisted and finally defeated," she continued.
Keith's website describes her as a "writer, radical feminist, food activist, and environmentalist." Among her works is a 2011 book called "Deep Green Resistance," which "evaluates strategic options for resistance, from nonviolence to guerrilla warfare, and the conditions required for those options to be successful."
A petition at change.org called for the conference to be cancelled and said Keith's presence at a recent Public Interest Law Conference "caused a huge outcry, with many environmental, activist, and governing organizations and thousands of supporters denouncing her speech."
Video of Keith's remarks can be seen above.

Egypt: Brotherhood tries to disrupt presidential elections, so far 20 arrested

egyptian-christians-after-protestEgyptian state security have already “arrested 20 rioters belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood” in a number of cities and provinces for trying to disrupt the presidential electoral process hours after polls opened on the first day, including through banditry, as happened in the Sanuras province, or by threatening voters, as happened in the village of Dafnu.
In other areas, followers of the Muslim Brotherhood protested and rioted, holding pictures of former Brotherhood president Morsi.
Many in Egypt expect more such disruptions from the Brotherhood, including possible acts of terror.
Conversely, the military that ousted and imprisoned many key Brotherhood members, and which has since been targeted, is especially on guard for any potential attacks.
While some may say that the Brotherhood and its supporters are only engaging in such desperate acts because they feel they have been treated unjustly after the June 2013 revolution saw the ousting of Morsi, it should be noted that even before Morsi became president, back during the 2012 presidential elections, they also terrorized people into voting the “right” way.

Egypt sentences 529 members of Muslim Brotherhood to death!!!

An Egyptian court sentenced to death 529 members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood on Monday on a variety of charges, including murdering a police officer and attacking police, according to reports published this morning.

Among the accused are several key figures of deposed President Mohamed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, one of whom is spiritual leader Mohammed Badie.
Since last July, when the national army deposed Morsi — Egypt’s first elected and civilian president — political turmoil has enveloped the nation of roughly 80 million. Hundreds of Brotherhood members have been killed and thousands more arrested.
Monday’s announcement is likely to worsen Islamist-secular tension.
It represents one of the most sweeping actions against the Brotherhood since Field Marshal Abdel Fatah al-Sisi took power.
“The court has decided to sentence to death 529 defendants, and 16 were acquitted,” lawyer Ahmed al-Sharif told Reuters. The defendants have been on trial since Saturday in Minya south of the capital. The sentence arrived on the second day of the hearing.
On August 14, security forces broke up several protests in Cairo that had been organized by the Muslim Brotherhood, and the defendants were charged with attacking people and destroying property during that melee. In addition, the defendants were accused of committing acts of violence that ultimately killed two policemen in Minya.

WH rules employers can’t dump workers into health exchanges

WH rules employers can’t dump workers into health exchanges

downloadIt figures the Obama administration would wait for a three-day weekend to announce its latest executive rule change to Obamacare (aka the “law of the land”).
This one is a doozy. The implications are so far-reaching that the official White House newspaper, the New York Times, buried the story by Robert Pear on page A12 of the New York edition. Here’s the gist of it:
Many employers had thought they could shift health costs to the government by sending their employees to a health insurance exchange with a tax-free contribution of cash to help pay premiums, but the Obama administration has squelched the idea in a new ruling. Such arrangements do not satisfy the health care law, the administration said, and employers may be subject to a tax penalty of $100 a day — or $36,500 a year — for each employee who goes into the individual marketplace.
The ruling this month, by the Internal Revenue Service, blocks any wholesale move by employers to dump employees into the exchanges.
[…]
Many employers — some that now offer coverage and some that do not — had concluded that it would be cheaper to provide each employee with a lump sum of money to buy insurance on an exchange, instead of providing coverage directly.

Pear quotes Obama as recently saying, “I don’t think that an employer-based system is going to be, or should be, replaced anytime soon,” which is a total reversal of the official position articulated in February. Back then, the administration and its contingent in Congress were bragging that Obamacare allowed workers to “escape their jobs.” Suddenly, the dreaded condition known as “job lock” is back on the table, hamstringing the hordes of Americans who were planning the pursue their lifelong dreams.
According to the Galen Institute, which has been keeping score, this latest directive from the IRS becomes the 42nd unilateral “administrative action” undertaken by the White House.

Incompetent VA slashes D-Day vet’s benefits to $6 a month!

Incompetent VA slashes D-Day vet’s benefits to $6 a month!

A Navy veteran who braved German fire to land troops on the French coast on D-Day 70 years ago is taking a different kind of fire from his own Department of Veterans Affairs.
collagejosephteson0526Joseph Teson of Watervliet, N.Y., has had his VA benefits slashed to $6 a month after bureaucracy bean-counters discovered an overpayment in the $300 a month benefits he’d been receiving, according to an NBC affiliate in Albany.
WNYT-TV reported Teson was notified of the overpayment last year when he received a VA letter stating a change in his “entitlement to compensation and pension benefits” had resulted in an overpayment to him of $3,090. And the federal government — that leviathan in our lives that’s bragging about only running a $500 billion deficit for 2014 — wants that three grand back.
“Since you are currently receiving VA benefits, we plan to withhold those benefits until the amount you were overpaid is recouped,” the letter stated.
So, thanks to the federal government’s own incompetence — it’s not like Teson went to the office and robbed the till himself –  his VA benefits are down to $6 a month.
Teson doesn’t sound like he’s starving. He still has Social Security and his pension – his grown children are around if things get too tough for him and his wife of 67 years. Truth be told, he doesn’t sound like he cares much one way or the other; he’s 89 kyears old and he knows the score.
But $6 a month?
This is 2014. Five years ago, at the dawn of the Age of Obama, power-drunk Democrats decided to waste $800 billion – that’s BILLION — on a 2009 stimulus that stimulated nothing. The next year progressives in the White HouseWhite House put up a half-billion taxpayer dollars in loan guarantees for a soon-to-be-bankrupt solar-powered con game called Solyndra (now all but forgotten in the Obama litany of corruption).
And God only knows how many uncountable hundreds of millions have been spent on the disaster of Obamacare and all its works.
But this same government has no problem cutting an elderly man’s benefits to $6 a month to get back $3,000 it gave him in the first place.
It’s not just an insult to Teson, it’s a disgrace to the rest of us – as this administration has been since one minute after noon on Jan. 20, 2009.
Back in June 1944, a young sailor named Joe Teson could never have imagined his government would be paying him $6 a month in benefits for putting his life on the line for a country at war.
In 2014, it’s just as hard to believe.

White House mistakenly identifies CIA chief in Afghanistan

The CIA’s top officer in Kabul was exposed Saturday by the White House when his name was inadvertently included on a list provided to news organizations of senior U.S. officials participating in President Obama’s surprise visit with U.S. troops.
The White House recognized the mistake and quickly issued a revised list that did not include the individual, who had been identified on the initial release as the “Chief of Station” in Kabul, a designation used by the CIA for its highest-ranking spy in a country.

The disclosure marked a rare instance in which a CIA officer working overseas had his cover — the secrecy meant to protect his actual identity — pierced by his own government. The only other recent case came under significantly different circumstances, when former CIA operative Valerie Plame was exposed as officials of the George W. Bush administration sought to discredit her husband, a former ambassador and fierce critic of the decision to invade Iraq.
The Post is withholding the name of the CIA officer at the request of Obama administration officials who warned that the officer and his family could be at risk if the name were published. The CIA and the White House declined to comment.
The CIA officer was one of 15 senior U.S. officials identified as taking part in a military briefing for Obama at Bagram air base, a sprawling military compound north of Kabul. Others included U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan James B. Cunningham and Marine Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., the commander of U.S. and coalition forces in the country.
Their names were included on a list of participants in the briefing provided by U.S. military officials to the White House press office.
The list was circulated by e-mail to reporters who traveled to Afghanistan with Obama, and disseminated further when it was included in a “pool report,” or summary of the event meant to be shared with other news organizations, including foreign media, not taking part in the trip.
In this case, the pool report was filed by Washington Post White House bureau chief Scott Wilson. Wilson said he had copied the list from the e-mail provided by White House press officials. He sent his pool report to the press officials, who then distributed it to a list of more than 6,000 recipients.
Wilson said that after the report was distributed, he noticed the unusual reference to the station chief and asked White House press officials in Afghanistan whether they had intended to include that name.
Initially, the press office raised no objection, apparently because military officials had provided the list to distribute to news organizations. But senior White House officials realized the mistake and scrambled to issue an updated list without the CIA officer’s name. The mistake, however, already was being noted on Twitter, although without the station chief’s name.
It is unclear whether the disclosure will force the CIA to pull the officer out of Afghanistan. As the top officer in one of the agency’s largest overseas posts, with hundreds of officers, analysts and other subordinates, the station chief in Kabul probably has been identified to senior Afghan government officials and would not ordinarily take part in clandestine missions beyond the U.S. Embassy compound.
The identities of at least three CIA station chiefs in Pakistan have been exposed in recent years. In one case, a CIA officer became a target of death threats after his cover was blown, forcing the agency to rush him out of the country.
