White House to Defy Congressional Subpoena, Prevent Top Political Aide From Testifying at Hearing

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is defying a congressional subpoena by keeping a top political aide to President Barack Obama from testifying at a hearing Wednesday.

The White House is arguing that Obama adviser David Simas (SEE’-muhs) is immune from subpoena by the House Oversight Committee in its investigation into the political office that he directs.
White House counsel Neil Eggleston says in a letter to Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (EYE’-suh) that the Simas subpoena threatens the constitutional separation of powers.
White House lawyers spent an hour and 15 minutes Tuesday briefing the committee’s staff behind closed doors on the political office’s efforts to comply with federal law. But Issa says the committee still has questions he wants Simas to answer publicly.

Whenever Democrats are in real trouble politically, the Republicans seem to come up with something new that distracts the public’s attention from the Democrats’ problems. Who says Republicans are not compassionate?

With public opinion polls showing President Obama’s sinking approval rate, in the wake of his administration’s multiple fiascoes and scandals — the disgraceful treatment of veterans who need medical care, the Internal Revenue Service coverups, the tens of thousands of children flooding across our open border — Republicans have created two new distractions that may yet draw attention away from the Democrats’ troubles.
From the Republican establishment, Speaker of the House John Boehner has announced plans to sue Barack Obama for exceeding his authority. And from the Tea Party wing of the Republicans, former Governor Sarah Palin has called for impeachment of the president.
Does President Obama deserve to be sued or impeached? Yes! Is there a snowball’s chance in hell that either the lawsuit or an impeachment will succeed? No!
Barack Obama’s repeated disregard of the laws that he is supposed to follow, and his blatantly changing these laws passed by Congress, are a threat to the whole Constitutional form of government, on which all our freedoms depend.
Once a president — any president — can create his own laws unilaterally, we are on our way to becoming a banana republic, where arbitrary rule from the top replaces representative government by “we the people.”
Why not sue Barack Obama then, or impeach him?
For the simplest of all reasons: Neither of these actions is going to do anything to stop Obama, or even discredit him — and both can create a distraction that draws attention away from the Democrats’ disasters during an election year.

Either the lawsuit or an impeachment — or both — can hurt the Republicans, by making it look like they are playing Mickey Mouse politics during an election year. President Obama is already making a joke out of Speaker Boehner’s threatened lawsuit by saying, “So sue me!”
Courts don’t like to get involved in cases where one branch of government is suing another — and the Supreme Court does not have to take any case that it does not want to take. Even a lower court can throw out Boehner’s lawsuit as a political issue that does not belong in court. Then it will be the Republicans who will have egg on their faces.
As for impeachment, the House of Representatives can impeach any president they want to. But an impeachment is essentially just an indictment that leaves it up to the Senate to decide whether to vote to remove the president from office.
So long as the Democrats control the Senate, impeachment of Barack Obama is guaranteed to lose. And this too would leave the Republicans with egg on their faces during an election year.
The political fate of the Republican Party is not something that those of us who are not Republicans need to worry about. If they want to shoot themselves in the foot again, so be it.


But all Americans have to worry — and worry big time — about the fate of this country if Republicans blow their chances of taking control of the Senate.
If Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid continues his iron control, President Obama can nominate whatever kinds of federal judges he wants to, knowing that they will be confirmed by the Senate.
Since federal judges have lifetime tenure, this would in effect extend the Obama administration long past the point when Barack Obama leaves the White House. All he needs to do is pack the federal courts with judges who share his contempt for the Constitution and his zeal to impose a far-left agenda at all costs.
This year’s elections — especially the Senate elections — can decide the fate of this country for a long time to come. That is why Republicans’ launching of foredoomed symbolic actions like lawsuits and impeachment is such an irresponsible self-indulgence.
When the country is at a historic crossroads is not the time for futile gestures like this, which can create bigger disasters than we already have.

US Secretary of State John Kerry urged Hamas to accept Egypt’s ceasefire proposal to halt fighting with Israel in Gaza.

In a brief statement released by the State Department on Tuesday, Kerry welcomed Israel’s decision to accept the proposal. “The Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire and negotiations provides an opportunity to end the violence and restore calm,” Kerry said. ”We welcome the Israeli cabinet’s decision to accept it. We urge all other parties to accept the proposal.”

According to the IDF, at least 35 rockets have been fired on Israel since 9:00 am Tuesday, when an Egyptian-brokered truce was meant to come into effect. A direct hit was scored on a house in Ashdod but no one was injured. Five rockets were fired at Rishon Letzion and intercepted.
Between 10:00a.m. – 11:00 a.m., four rockets hit open areas outside the Eshkol region. No injuries nor damage were reported. Sirens rang in the Eshkol region, Ashkelon, and communities near Gaza.
Between 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., the Iron Dome shot down at least two missiles over Ashdod, and sirens rang in Sderot, Sha’ar HaNegev, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Hof Ashkelon, Beit Raban, Gan Yavne, Kannot, Kiryat Malachi, Be’er Tuvia, and the Eshkol region.
Since 12:00 p.m., sirens sounded in Sderot, the Eshkol region, the Shefelah, Ashkelon, Ashdod and S’dot HaNegev; rocket fire was also spreading northward, with sirens in Rehovot, Yavne, Zihron Ya’akov, Carmel, Haifa, and Menashe. At least two rockets hit in Eshkol; no injuries or damage reported.
Since 1:00 p.m., sirens have sounded in the Shefelah coastal plain region and in Ashdod.
‘Cease-Fire?’
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu delivered a message to Hamas Tuesday in a press conference, according to which the IDF operation in Gaza will continue and be widened, unless Hamas stops firing at Israel.
“If Hamas rejects the ceasefire, we will have international legitimacy to restore the necessary quiet,” he said, some three hours after the hour set for the ceasefire passed, only to be followed by more rockets from Hamas.
“The goal of the operation was and remains to restore quiet while delivering a harsh blow to Hamas. We have hit them very hard and we foiled attempts to terrorize Israel’s population.
“We heeded the Egyptian offer in order to give a chance to demilitarization of the Gaza Strip by diplomatic means. If Hamas rejects this – and it looks that way – Israel will have all the legitimacy to restore quiet,” he added.
Israel accepted the truce in a surprise move Tuesday morning, after Hamas categorically rejected the notion of a ceasefire Monday night.
“A ceasefire without reaching an agreement is rejected. In times of war, you don’t cease fire and then negotiate,” Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum told AFP.
Hamas spokesperson Sami Abu Zahri reiterated this Tuesday morning.
“The idea of ??disarmament is not subject to discussion,” he said, adding that “the Palestinians are on occupied land, so it has a legitimate right to resist.”
In a statement issued around the same time, Hamas said it did not consider itself obliged by the Egyptian proposal.
“Because we were excluded from the consultations for this (truce) initiative, we are not obliged to abide by it,” it said.
Meanwhile, an IDF spokesperson indicated to Walla! News shortly after the rocket fire that – truce or not – the IDF may enter Gaza after the attack on the Eshkol region.
“We are prepared to enter Gaza,” he said. He added that the cease-fire agreement only stipulated that Israel would hold back fire if Hamas followed suit.
“All the options and related programs from Operation Protective Edge are still relevant,” he added.

(AINA) -- ISIS has ordered government workers to stop giving rations to Christians and Shiites in Mosul, according to a report by Younes Thonon for ankawa.com.
The official in charge of distributing rations in the Rifaq neighborhood said he had received orders from ISIS to cut the rations.
Mr. Fadel Younis, the official in charge for the Kifaat neighborhood, said that he had received a similar order and a threat from ISIS, and was warned that if he gives rations to Christians and Shiites he will be charged and prosecuted according to sharia law.
The Ministry of Commerce had recently decided to give citizens three ration items, including flour, for the month of July.

During a recent stop in Austria, Secretary of State John Kerry met with some State Department insiders in Vienna for an informal conversation. While recalling the scope of a recent commencement speech he delivered at his alma mater, Yale University, Kerry noted that it was “48 years to the day that I was privileged to speak as a graduating senior to my own class.”

Delving into the content of his speech, he explained that he focused on a theme leftists have often been accused of: denying America is any more special than any other nation.
“I get always a little uptight when I hear politicians say how exceptional we are,” he said in recapping his speech to the recent graduates.
He went on to describe those who celebrate America’s greatness as “kind of in-your-face,” noting that “a lot of other people are exceptional” and “a lot of other places do exceptional things.”
The response from many on social media was scathing.

Kerry couched his globalist rhetoric with the requisite assertion that America is, in fact, “exceptional in a certain way that no other nation is.”
He told the gathering that Americans are united by common ideals rather than the shared history of older nations.
“We are not defined by ethnicity,” he said. “We are not defined by bloodline or by anything except an idea.”
He recognized the importance of America’s founding documents in establishing “the idea that people are created equal and that all people have a chance to aspire for greatness, for anything they want.”
