Iran reacts to news on landing of American plane in Tehran
Tehran, Apr 19, IRNA – Foreign Ministry spokeswoman reacting to broadcasted news on landing of an American plane in Tehranˈs Mehrabad Airport said on Friday that the US plane was chartered by Ghana Presidential Office and was carrying a high ranking Ghanaian delegation.
ˈThe
planeˈs passengers included a high ranking Ghanaian delegation,
comprised of that countryˈs officials and led by a brother of Ghanaˈs
president,ˈ said Marziyeh Afkham, adding that even the crew members of
the American plane were all non-American.
She said that Iran and Ghana were both interested in further expansion of their bilateral ties and cooperation.
ˈThe Ghanaian delegationˈs last week visit was made to pursue the implementation of the agreements reached during a visit of Iran by that countryˈs president two years ago,ˈ she added.
The African countryˈs delegation left Iran yesterday (on Thursday) following a number of meetings with Iranian officials, including Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, according to Afkham.
President John Dramani Mahama pledged on February 11, 2013 Ghana’s commitment to deepen bilateral relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
He said the decision to re-open Ghana’s mission in 2009 in Tehran was informed by the commitment exhibited by Iran in its dealings with Ghana.
“The Iranian Government has made considerable contributions to the development of Ghana in the agriculture, health and education sectors,” he added.
President Mahama made the pledge in a speech read on his behalf by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resource, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, at the 34th anniversary celebrations of the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran in Accra.
He recalled that Ghana and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) within the framework in which Iran made available to Ghana a grant for the upgrading of the Iran Clinic in Accra to a polyclinic status.
The grant was also for the construction of a cultural community centre at Kumbungu and the Iran Hybrid Rice Plantation in Tamale, both in the Northern Region.
President Mahama said that the driving force behind the Ghana-Iran bilateral relation was a permanent joint commission on cooperation.
He said the fourth session of the joint commission produced the signing of four agreements relating to the construction of technical and vocational schools, implementation of the automation of digitalization of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) radio and television archives and the lifting of visas on diplomatic and service passport holders.
He was optimistic that the Iranian business community would take advantage of the prevailing congenial investment and political climate in Ghana to invest in government’s priority areas such as oil and gas expansion and modernization of air and seaports, infrastructural projects, water resources and the expansion and mobilization of electrical transmission systems.
The Iranian Ambassador to Ghana, Mohammad Soleymani was present in the event.
Soleymani lauded Ghanaˈs effort at conducting peaceful elections, saying that ˈthis shows that the Ghanaian nation is aware of its destiny and interests.ˈ
