The Individual Mandate Survives As A Tax, Justices Find Fault With Medicaid Expansion

In the end, according to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Affordable Care Act survives "largely unscathed."
Kaiser Health News has the text of the court's decision.
You can also watch a replay of Kaiser Health News' live video webcast featuring KHN's Mary Agnes Carey, Stuart Taylor and Julie Appleby as well as SCOTUSblog's Tom Goldstein and Lyle Denniston as they break down Thursday's landmark Supreme Court decision on the constitutionality of the health law.
Kaiser Health News: Justices Uphold Individual Mandate, Set Limits On Medicaid Expansion
The U.S. Supreme Court today upheld nearly all of the landmark federal health law, affirming its mandate that most everyone carry insurance, but complicating the government's plan to extend coverage to the poorest Americans. Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. joined the court's four liberals in upholding the mandate, the best-known and least popular part of the law. The court also upheld hundreds of other rules embedded in the law designed to help millions more Americans obtain insurance and to refashion the health care industry. But a majority of the justices voted that the government could not compel states to expand Medicaid, the federal state program for the poor, by threatening to withhold federal money to existing Medicaid programs (Appleby and Rau, 6/28).
Kaiser Health News (Video): Stuart Taylor: 'Most Amazing Supreme Court Theater I've Ever Seen'
Kaiser Health News' legal analyst Stuart Taylor talks to Jakie Judd about the source of consitutional authority that the Supreme Court found to uphold the law -- and the new options states will have for the Medicaid program (6/28).
The Washington Post: Supreme Court Upholds Health-Care Law, Individual Mandate
Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. sided with the majority in voting to uphold the law, Obama’s signature domestic initiative. ... The health-care issue thrust the Supreme Court into the public spotlight unlike anything since its role in the 2000 presidential election. The court’s examination of the law received massive coverage — especially during three days of oral arguments in March — and its outcome remained Washington's most closely guarded secret (Barnes and Aizenman, 6/28).
Los Angeles Times: Supreme Court Upholds Healthcare Law As Tax Measure
The ruling was not a total victory for the Obama administration. Chief Justice Roberts, who wrote the opinion for a 5-4 majority, said the required expansion of Medicaid violates states' rights may be unconstitutional. "The states are given no choice in this case. They must either accept a basic change in the nature of Medicaid or risk losing all Medicaid funding," he wrote. He said the federal government cannot require the states to follow this part of the law (Savage, 6/28).
The Wall Street Journal: Supreme Court Upholds Mandate As Tax
It upheld the mandate as a tax, in an opinion by Chief Justice John Roberts. The justices also found fault with part of the health-care law's expansion of Medicaid, a joint federal-state insurance program for the poor. The justices made some changes to the Medicaid portion of the law. The court said Congress was acting within its powers under the Constitution when it required most Americans to carry health insurance or pay a penalty—the provision at the center of the two-year legal battle (Kendall, Radnofsky and Bravin, 6/28).
The New York Times: Supreme Court Lets Health Law Largely Stand
The Supreme Court on Thursday largely let stand President Obama's health care overhaul, in a mixed ruling that Court observers were rushing to analyze (Cushman, 6/28).
Politico: Supreme Court Upholds Health Law Mandate
The Supreme Court upheld the health care law's individual mandate Thursday, ruling that Congress did not overstep its power by requiring nearly all Americans to buy health insurance. Chief Justice John Roberts joined with the court's four liberal justices in the ruling, which says Congress had the authority for the mandate under Congress's taxing power (Haberkorn, 6/28).
USA Today: Supreme Court Upholds Obama Health Care Law
The Supreme Court upheld the health care law today in a splintered, complex opinion that gives President Obama a major victory. Basically. the justices said that the individual mandate -- the requirement that most Americans buy health insurance or pay a fine -- is constitutional as a tax (Jackson, 6/28).
Reuters: Supreme Court Upholds Centerpiece Of Obama Healthcare Law
"The Affordable Care Act's requirement that certain individuals pay a financial penalty for not obtaining health insurance may reasonably be characterized as a tax," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the court's majority in the opinion (Vicini, 6/28).
ABC News: The Mandate Can Stay, Supreme Court Says In Health Care Ruling
In a landmark ruling with wide-ranging implications, the Supreme Court today upheld the so-called individual mandate requiring Americans to buy health insurance or pay a penalty, the key part of President Obama's signature health care law. The court ruled that the mandate is unconstitutional, but it can stay as part of Congress's power under a taxing clause. The court said that the government will be allowed to tax people for not having health insurance (Negrin and de Vogue, 6/28).

SUDDEN THREAT ENDANGERS HILLARY’S 2016 RUN

obama-hillaryA threat to Hillary Clinton’s much anticipated 2016 presidential campaign appears to be developing in Egypt where that nation’s government is taking steps to criminalize the Muslim Brotherhood. Specifically, a new criminal complaint has been filed with Egypt’s attorney general, Hisham Barakat, alleging then-U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton collaborated with Naglaa Mahmoud, the wife of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, in seeking to incite domestic insurrections to topple Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the Egyptian general who has been commander in chief of the Egyptian armed forces, as well as minister of defense, since Aug. 12, 2012. Researcher Walid Shoebat, a native Arabic-speaker and a former Palestinian Liberation Organization operative, has reported on his blog that credible news sources in Egypt have reported in Arabic that criminal charges have been brought against Hillary Clinton and Morsi’s wife. Shoebat translated the following from an Egyptian Mehwar TV channel news video in which television reporter Nasr Qaffas explains on camera details of an interview Turkey’s Anatolia news agency conducted with Naglaa Mahmoud. The excerpts from the transcript of the Mehwar TV news video include comments by Naglaa Mahmoud implicating Huma Abedin, wife of former Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner and the former Hillary Clinton chief of staff whom WND has identified as having close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood: More ClockNearMidnight copy

Hillary Clinton Named As Co-Conspirator In Failed Counter Coup to Reinstate Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt

We are under the condition of war and Jihad, and we have a good command of the necessities of war, the ancient and the modern. I will keep the tactics of war secret because in Islam, war is trickery.”
Those are the words of Mohammed Morsi’s wife, Naglaa Mahmood Morsi, in a recent interview reported on by Anatolia Press, Turkey’s news agency. She also stated that she is actively working to stage a revolt to overthrow Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi.
She also  claims she collaborated with Hillary Clinton on the counter coup. She also claims these communications are on-going.  She says she has recorded every conversation with Mrs. Clinton.
Naglaa Morsi further contended that her friendship with Hillary Clinton goes back many years and that is still on-going. Al Wafd and Vetogate and other Arab media sources are reporting similar information.
The report confirms that the relationship between Clinton and the Muslim Sisterhood. Naglaa Mahmoud is one of the 63 leaders along with Saleha Abedin, mother of Huma Abedin.  Huma Abedin is Anthony Wiener’s wife and  a close adviser to Hillary Clinton.  If Naglaa Mahmoud’s claims are correct and this relationship goes back over 30 years to when Naglaa was living in the US, then it fuels the accusations by many conservatives, particularly Michelle Bachman,  that Huma Abedin is a plant for Muslim radicals and confirms Hilary Clinton’s ties to that organization.

In an unlikely way, the report vindicates Michel Bachman’s allegations made in 2012 regarding Clinton and Huma Abedin.  At the time, Bachman was called a bigot for expressing her concerns. This interview shows that Bachman’s concerns were well grounded.
Egypt’s Attorney General, Hisham Barakat has filed yet another complaint based on the reports. The complaint ( 18337) requests that Naglaa Mahmoud be arrested and interrogated. This follows the reports filed earlier by the AG regarding Barack Obama’s brother aiding Osama Bin Laden with Barack Obama’s assistance and as well as Obama’s attempt to install the Muslim Brotherhood in power in Egypt.

Creepiest Obama story yet

Creepiest Obama story yet

Rick Moran
The newly installed tapestry of President Obama casts a warm smile over guests at an event @USAinUK last night.
Twitchy has the pic of what appears to be a life size Obama tapestry hanging on the wall in our embassy in London.

Love the groveling by our embassy staff - such a "warm smile," eh?
I did a little searching and discovered that the tapestry is not new. It was created by an artist named Chuck Close and was part of a two-tapestry display in honor of Obama during the Democratic Convention at the Mint Museum in North Carolina.

What's really creepy about it is that it reminds me of every tin pot, banana republic dictator in the world with those huge murals and propaganda paintings on the walls of buildings always showing the thug smiling benignly. Orwell knew what he was talking about.

CAPITOL UPDATE: Harry Reid Gone In 2016

CAPITOL UPDATE: Harry Reid Gone In 2016

WHEN I SEE OBAMA GONE 2016 THAT WILL BE THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE

He may continue to currently hold sway over the Democrat controlled Senate, but back in his home state of Nevada, Harry Reid is about to find himself out of a job soon thanks to an incredibly popular and talented Republican governor named Brian Sandoval, the first Hispanic governor in that state’s history.  Word is Governor Sandoval is preparing to become Senator Sandoval, a move that will send Harry Reid packing.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, possibly soon to be Senator Sandoval…
http://dwulsterman.com
_____________________________________________
The Mainstream Media has said little regarding Governor’s Sandoval’s success in Nevada due in great part to his being Hispanic, and a Republican, runs counter to the narrative that the Republican Party is not a big tent party.  He has a record of reducing the size of government and cutting spending while passing education reforms like ending teacher tenure and establishing merit pay, all with a Democratic legislature.  A self described fiscal conservative who favors states’ rights, and a social moderate, Sandoval has already cut his state’s budget by a half billion dollars and repealed hundreds of anti-business regulations,  a move that has found approval among both Republican and Democrat voters.  His approval ratings are so high in fact, the Democratic Governors Association has all but waived the white flag in attempting any credible challenge to Governor Sandoval’s re-election bid in 2014.
Following what will likely be a comfortable victory in 2014, is apparently a Senate run by Governor Sandoval to unseat longtime D.C. power player, Harry Reid.  The Reid political machine is already well aware of the Sandoval threat, having concluded internal polling last fall showing the current Nevada governor easily winning over Reid in a head to head matchup.  The data results were so lopsided in fact, that Reid has indicated to some staff he may retire should Governor Sandoval decide to run against him, rather than face such a formidable opponent.  Reid would be seventy-seven in 2016, and is already showing signs of slowing down in recent years.
Nevada Democrats are hinting at a way to keep Sandoval in place as governor though – by electing a Democrat Lieutenant Governor in 2014.  This may be enough to prevent Sandoval from handing over the state reigns of p0wer to a Democrat and instead serving out a full second term, allowing Harry Reid to secure re-election in 2016.
Whispers in D.C. though are already indicating that won’t happen.  Sandoval apparently has a personal dislike for the acidic, abrasive, and abusive Harry Reid, and wants him gone – for good.  He also knows that defeating such a powerful national fixture in liberal progressive politics would elevate his own status both at home and throughout the nation.
In short, for Brian Sandoval, this is personal as much as political, and he is more than willing and ready to crush Harry Reid in 2016.

Godspeed Governor Sandoval.   -UM

Per Reader Suggestion…
Had a post yesterday that made me realize I should quickly outline the order my books should be read in.  As I told them yesterday, it is something I should have done sooner – been so busy with the writing I neglected to explain the order of the stories!   I included the links to the collection offerings of some of the books as that gives the reader a cost savings over downloading each title individually.  So here goes…
The order the books should be read in are as follows:  Dominatus, Tumultus, Mac Walker’s Benghazi, and Mac Walker’s Betrayal.  A new series was then made available titled, The Second Oldest Profession, and the next in line to be published is Bennington P.I.

**TUMULTUS:    LINK
**MAC WALKER’S BENGHAZI (COLLECTION):  LINK
**MAC WALKER’S BETRAYAL (COLLECTION):  LINK

And then coming soon in 2014 is BENNINGTON  P.I.  “Bonita”

Harvard evacuated due to 'unconfirmed' reports of explosives on campus

Harvard University on Monday warned of "unconfirmed reports" of explosives planted at four buildings on its Cambridge, Massachusetts campus. The school said it evacuated the buildings.

"Science Center, Thayer, Sever, and Emerson. Evacuate those buildings now," the tweet said. Harvard University and Cambridge police were on the scene investigating.
Students & police wait in Science Center Plaza after bomb threat forces evacuation at Harvard.
Harvard's campus is located in a crowded urban area adjoining Boston.
"Out of an abundance of caution, the buildings have been evacuated while the report is investigated. Harvard's focus is on the safety of our students, faculty and staff. We will update the media when we have more information," the University posted on its website.
Ben Forman, an employee at the Harvard Book Store on Massachusetts Avenue, told the Boston Globe the atmosphere around Harvard’s campus was not too panicked this morning as police swept through the yard.
“It looks pretty relaxed out there actually,” he said.“There is a gate closed into the yard, but its not panicked.”
Meanwhile, Dean of Freshmen Thomas Dingman says morning exams in affected areas have been cancelled.
Shortly before 11 a.m., HUPD spokesperson Steven G. Catalano said in a phone interview that no explosives had been found at that point.
Asked about growing media speculation on whether the call could have been a hoax, Sam Weinstock, incoming president of student newspaper the Harvard Crimson, refused to speculate.
"We have no idea what the nature of the call was or what the nature of the threat is now," he told CNN.
Monday's scare comes three days after an American schoolboy armed with a shotgun opened fire and wounded two fellow students before killing himself at a high school in Colorado.
It also comes less than a month after Harvard's great rival Yale went on a four-hour lockdown after an anonymous caller said his roommate was planning to shoot people on the campus.
Teams of police scoured the sprawling Yale campus in New Haven, Connecticut but there were never any reports of shots fired nor of any injuries. Nor was the presumed gunman found.
Harvard was founded in 1636 and has around 21,000 students. It has educated current and former leaders from all over the world and a string of American presidents, including Barack Obama.
