POLICE SHUT DOWN CONTRACTED EVENT ABOUT CONSTITUTION AFTER CAIR COMPLAINT – IS FREE SPEECH STILL A PROTECTED RIGHT IN AMERICA?
ANN
ARBOR, MI – It seems reasonable to conclude that an event promoting the
Constitution, and the idea that American laws should be the only laws
recognized in American courts, would be a welcomed event at a public
school. The event entitled: “Constituting Michigan – Founding Principles Act” took place on January 26, 2012 at an Allegan High School auditorium which had been rented by Willis Sage.
Not according to a press release by the Thomas More Law Center released today on their website:
Amid shouts of “What about free speech?”
from the audience, the Allegan Police Department ordered the event
shut-down. School officials notified police that they had received a
letter complaining about the event from Dawud Walid, Executive Director
of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI). The letter asked
the school to disallow the event despite an existing contract.
Police
have given conflicting reports to the reason that they shut down the
event, but school officials had stated, while evicting the event, that
it was a direct result of the complaint received by the school from a
CAIR representative.
As a
result, the firm filed a civil lawsuit against Council on
American-Islamic Relations (CAIR- MI), its Executive Director, the City
of Allegan, the Allegan Police Department and the School District
alleging civil rights violations.
CAIR
isn’t without controversy; once named an unindicted co-conspirator in
the largest terrorism funding trial in U. S. history, U.S. v. Holy Land Foundation.
We recently reported
on the influence CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood had within the media
and the current administration; but what’s shocking is the extent that
public officials will go to pacify these groups in order to avoid being
called out.

This is
just the latest of several Constitutional challenges that the Thomas
More Law Center has taken on including the Bradley Johnson v. Poway
School District in California which we reported on in September of last year.
