Wounded Marine vet: Bring down Marine flag or face $300-a-day fine
A Florida small business owner and wounded in action Marine veteran has been threatened to either bring down his public display of his Marine Corps colors, along with the flags of all the other branches of the Armed Forces or face a fine of $300 for each day they remaining flying, as reported by Fox News on April 13, 2013.
In the small coastal town of Holly Hill outside of the vacation hot spot of Daytona Beach, former Marine Eddie Colosimo was officially informed by the city government that unless be struck the colors he would face a fine that conceivably rack up to the thousands of dollars.
As reported by MyFoxOrlando.com, Colosimo owns a non-profit that helps support military veterans, Holly Hill's Bikers for First Amendments Rights, and was informed that the various military flags "violate new city codes that were passed in March."
Once A Marine...
Holding fast to his principles, Colosimo stated in an interview with the local Fox News affiliate:
"You're going to tell me that I can't honor them… show respect for them? The new city law requires "businesses to apply for a permit to display temporary signs or banners on their property."
I'm sorry; bring your handcuffs. I'll go to jail.
I don’t care."
Colosimo, a wounded vet with a granddaughter, grandson and son-in-law who all currently serve in different branches of the Armed Forces, usually flew the flags on the weekends, but since received the notice, he's elected to fly the colors daily.
The determined Leatherneck compared his military flags to beer signs "doesn’t fly."
City officials announced "they will hold a special hearing to discuss Colosimo’s case."
