nuclear program with 20 new reactors
Special to WorldTribune.comNICOSIA — Iran plans to build additional nuclear energy reactors along its southern coast.
Officials said Iran has drafted plans to build up to 20 nuclear power plants. They said most of the proposed locations were near the southern port city of Bushehr as well as along the Caspian Sea.
“The power plants should have access to a huge source of water,” Iranian Atomic Energy Organization director Ali Salehi said. “The new power plants will be supported by desalinations, mainly located in southern parts of the country.”
Officials said IAEO has identified 34 sites for future reactors. They said this would include at least an additional energy facility at the 1,000 megawatt Bushehr, the first built in Iran and which began operations in 2012. In September 2013, Iran formally assumed operations of Bushehr.
Russia, which built Bushehr, has emerged as a leading contender to build additional nuclear power plants.
Officials said Moscow and Teheran were discussing expanding Bushehr in the first phase of a comprehensive nuclear energy program in which 20,000 megawatts of electricity would be generated.
“We are holding a dialogue with the Iranian side on the option of
prolonging our cooperation regarding the Bushehr nuclear power plant,”
Nikolai Spassky, deputy director of Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy
developer, Rosatom, said.
