Conservatives call for Mozilla boycott after ouster of Brendan Eichs

After Mozilla co-founder Brendan Eichs was pressured to resign as CEO of the company he helped form over a 2008 donation to a pro-traditional marriage group, conservatives called for a boycott of the company, with a number of users pledging to remove the popular browser from their computers, the Washington Times and others reported Friday.
A petition at Truth Revolt started by conservative activist Ben Shapiro also calls on Mozilla to stop discriminating against conservatives and urges petitioners to uninstall the browser.
"We, the undersigned, pledge to uninstall or cease usage of Mozilla Firefox in protest over Mozilla’s decision to fire Eich for his position on traditional marriage, which is held by tens of millions of religious and conservative Americans. Mozilla’s intolerance and discrimination against those with different political and religious viewpoints stands in stark contrast to its supposed mission to enshrine 'equality and freedom of speech,' and must not be tolerated," the petition says.
As of this writing, over 5,000 have signed the petition.
Others have also joined the call.
The National Organization for Marriage, for example, said Eich's exit was the result of a "McCarthy-esque witch hunt."
“When Brendon Eich made his modest contribution to support Proposition 8, Barack Obama was on the ballot as a candidate who said he believed marriage was the union of one man and one woman," said NOM president Brian Brown. "Now Eich has been the target of a vicious character attack by gay activists who have forced him out of the company he has helped lead for years."
Charles Krauthammer also called for a "counter boycott" of Mozilla, calling the move against Eich “totalitarian discourse” that “shows a level of intolerance that ought to be unacceptable.”
“This is the culture of the left not being satisfied with making an argument, or even prevailing in an argument, but in destroying personally and marginalizing people who oppose them,” he added. “In the same way that proponents of climate change declare the issue closed — it’s over, there’s no debate, it is settled science — and therefore anybody who is skeptical of that is considered anti-science, and is called a denier.”
A number of people made their feelings known on Mozilla's Facebook page.
"Eich is forced out because he exercised his First Amendment right of freedom of speech? I was an avid user of your browser, not anymore sadly," one person said.
"I think we all have misjudged you. You are the exact opposite of who you say you are. I will never use Firefox again," another person added.
A Facebook event calling for a boycott of Mozilla has also appeared.
"Mozilla has forced former CEO Brendan Eich to resign for supporting traditional marriage! Fight back," the event description says.
The company also got an earful on Twitter.
"Lack of free speech/ideas are what the Nazi's and Soviets used to do... You guys are good little Commies," one person said.
"YES! Let's punish ALL the people who think differently than you! They are guilt of #thoughtcrime," another person said.
Ironically, OKCupid, the dating service that led the witch hunt against Eich, still uses Javascript -- a language created by Eich -- on its website.
