A few hundred people gathered at the Temple of Justice Friday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the building’s opening in 1913. Attendees were treated to birthday cake and tours of the building, along with comments by Chief Justice Barbara Madsen and Justice Charles Wiggins.
TODAY
A pro-Second Amendment rally will take place on the Capitol Campus from noon to 7 p.m. today. The rally, sponsored by Guns Across America, will bring an expected 75 people to the Tivoli Fountain south lawn. Participants plan to show up with their legally owned, holstered handguns to advocate for gun rights.
MONDAY
A march beginning at the Capitol Theater in downtown Olympia and concluding at the steps of the Legislative Building will celebrate the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr., hoping “to continue Dr. King’s fight for racial and economic justice.” The march will begin at noon, with the rally at the Capitol steps starting at 12:30 p.m.
Also on Monday, Planned Parenthood’s Teen Council is sponsoring Teen Lobby Day. About 85 teens are expected to show up on the south portico of the Legislative Building between 11:30 and 1 p.m.
Muslims’ Lobby Day is also Monday. About 400 people are expected to show up at the Legislative Building, organizing on the front steps and in the Columbia Room. A group of about 50 will gather on the flag circle lawn between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to raise awareness about Muslims. The events are sponsored by the Council on American-Islamic Relations Washington and the Islamic Circle of North America.
Another 200 people will assemble in the rotunda of the Legislative Building between noon and 1 p.m. for Prevention Policy Day, which is sponsored by the Washington Association for Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention.
If you hear chanting in the afternoon, it probably is the Washington Education Association. The teacher’s union is organizing a singalong on the north steps of the Legislative Building between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
BILL INTRODUCTIONS
House Bill 1199 would prevent anyone younger than 8 from receiving a hunting license in the state of Washington. It also would require that any hunters younger than14 be accompanied by a licensed adult hunter unless hunting on family property.
House Bill 1198 would require all members of public agencies’ governing bodies to complete a Web-based training program on public records and open public meetings. Under the bill, the attorney general’s office would develop and implement the open records training program by July 2014.
