Iowa Governor: Host Illegal Unaccompanied Minors? Not In My State

Iowa Governor: Host Illegal Unaccompanied Minors? Not In My State

Terry Branstad
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad’s message is straight to the point. At a news conference on Monday, the Republican said that hosting the thousands of children pouring across the border would do more harm than good.
via CBS:
“The first thing we need to do is secure the border. I do have empathy for these kids,” Branstad said. “But I also don’t want to send the signal that (you) send your kids to America illegally. That’s not the right message.”
Branstad was included in a meeting of governors on Sunday, in which Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Matthews Burwell looked to gain support for states to host unaccompanied minors.
According to CBS, under current law, immigrant children who cross our border are placed under federal authority until a court can decide their fate. That’s a process that can take years.
Branstad took the hard road, but the right one. The Obama Administration needs to focus its efforts on securing the border- not providing avenues for children crossing it illegally then teaching them to become dependent on our government.
