[WATCH] John McCain on Rep. Louis Gohmert: He’s someone who ‘has no intelligence’
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) makes no effort to hide his contempt for his Tea Party colleagues, taking the opportunity to slam Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-Texas) and saying he’s someone who “has no intelligence.”McCain made an appearance on NBC Nightly News on Wednesday and spoke with host Brian Williams about Obamacare, and Democrats’ and Republicans’ failure to negotiate on the debt ceiling and continuing resolution. But Williams also pressed McCain on comments made by Gohmert at last week’s Values Voter Summit, where the Texas Republican slammed the Senator as someone who’s “supported al-Qaeda.”
And McCain held nothing back, insulting Gohmert’s intelligence.
“Sometimes those comments like that are made out of malice,” McCain said, “but if someone has no intelligence, I don’t view it as being a malicious statement. And you can’t respond to that kind of thing.”
McCain went on to note that there has been polarization in Congress — and within the GOP — and said he intends to maintain civility and “respect the views of others.”
But the 2008 Republican Presidential nominee has been an outspoken opponent of the Tea Party wing of the GOP, often resorting to name-calling and going so far as to coin the term “wacko birds” for the liberty-loving sect of the party. Last month a senior adviser for the Senator was quoted in GQ saying his boss “f**king hates [Sen. Ted] Cruz.”
Civility and respect, indeed, Sen. McCain.
