Last week, Colorado residents were being bombarded with advertisements regarding both sides of the spectrum when it comes to being in favor of or against gun control.
Two democratic senators were facing potentially losing their positions because of their fervent support for two gun control measures that were passed into law earlier this year. Last Tuesday, a recall election was held on behalf of Colorado Senators John Morse and Angela Giron, and to the surprise of many, the senators lost their seats.
Regardless of many Coloradoans being in favor of their recall, considering the citizens are who demanded the recall in the first place, it comes as a shock that the pro-gun control side of the isle lost the battle considering the astronomical amounts of money that it invested.
Big money even came from out of state in order to support the financial battle against the National Rifle Association’s efforts to protect Coloradoans from having their Second Amendment continue to be violated. As the New York Times reported, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad each individually contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend their “team player” in the vote recall war.
Together, the two out-of-state donators totaled more than $600,000, leaving the NRA to chip in only about $300,000 to try and recall the senators’ positions. Nonetheless, the recall was successful – making it the first in Colorado’s state history.
Former State House Candidate for Colorado House District 53, Jon Fye, told TSW that he’s satisfied with the results of the recall election. “It sends a strong message to Bloomberg and gun control advocates that their politics are not welcome in Colorado. State Senators and Representatives are supposed to listen to their constituents. Morse and Giron refused to listen to their constituents.”
The gun control bills are still laws, but citizens took a brazen stand against their government officials and requested that they get lost since they weren’t upholding the people’s requirements, much less the Constitution.
Reflecting on the results, Fye explained, “Hopefully this sends a strong message to other elected representatives that we’ve had enough of their anti-gun agenda,” alluding that the recall could be the start of elected officials realizing they’re going to be held accountable.
I look forward to Colorado turning Red again in 2014,” he said. Anticipating what’s yet to come, Fye detailed, “The next step is for Republicans to gain control of the House, Senate, and Governorship so we can get to work repealing these anti-gun bills that passed last session.”
