Obama Praises Mandela, Meets With Family in S. Africa
AP
President Barack Obama on Saturday met with relatives of an
ailing anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, and spoke by telephone with
Graça Machel, Mandela's wife, in the midst of a three-nation tour
through Africa, NBC News reported. The White House said earlier Obama,
"out of deference to Nelson Mandela's peace and comfort and the family's
wishes," would not visit the former leader in the hospital where he's
being treated for a lung infection. "I expressed my hope that Madiba
draws peace and comfort from the time that he is spending with loved
ones, and also expressed my heartfelt support for the entire family as
they work through this difficult time," Obama said. "I also reaffirmed
the profound impact that his legacy has had in building a free South
Africa, and in inspiring people around the world - including me."
Earlier Saturday Obama and South African President Jacob Zuma held a
press conference that touched on global trade, U.S. immigration reform
and Mandela's failing health and powerful legacy.
