What is Virtual Memory?

Virtual memory is used in addition to the physical memory (RAM) inside your computer. When you run programs which require more memory than your computer has, or programs are left running in the background, Windows manages the system memory in such a way that it swaps data saved between the physical memory and the virtual memory. The virtual memory is stored on your hard disk in a single file known as a page file or swap file. This file is typically around 1.5 times the amount of real memory available to your computer. For example, if you have a computer with two gigabytes of RAM, the page file will likely be around 3 gigabytes in size. By default, Windows manages the size of the page file for you and, under normal circumstances, you should not have to worry about it.

What causes Low Virtual Memory Problems?

There are various causes of this common Windows problem. If you encounter this issue regularly, it is likely to be caused by not having enough physical memory in your computer. Windows 7 requires a minimum of 1 GB of RAM for the 32-bit edition and 2 GB for the 64-bit edition. While you may be able to run Windows with less memory, you will likely encounter memory-related problems on occasion, particularly when you try to run a memory-intensive program or have too many programs open at once. If this is the case, then it is likely that the only way you can do away with the problem for good is by adding more memory to your computer.

If the problem only happens with a particular program, driver or game, then it is most likely to be caused by the program in question having a memory leak. If this is the case, you will either need to consult the technical support service for the program or try using a later version or an alternative solution.

How do I fix Low Virutal Memory problems?

To fix low virtual memory problems, try one of the following options:

Option 1: Change Your Page Files Settings

By default, Windows handles the page file size for you. In some cases, however, you may want to specify your own settings in order to improve performance and reliability.

Open the Start menu and right-click on "Computer" in the right-side pane. Click "Properties."
Click "Advanced system settings" to open the "System Properties" window.

Click "Settings" in the "Performance" section.

Open the "Advanced" tab and then click the "Change" button in the "Virtual memory" section.

Deselect the box beside "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives."
Enter custom sizes in the boxes beside "Initial size (MB)" and "Maximum size (MB). Set both of these to double the amount of physical memory installed on your computer. For example, if your computer has 1 GB of memory (1024 MB), set both values to 2048. If your computer has 2 GB, set the values to 4096 MB.

Click "OK" to save your changes and close any remaining windows.

Option 2: Upgrade Memory

While the above method will fix some low virtual memory errors, you may want to consider upgrading the amount of memory in your computer, particularly if you still encounter the problem regularly after attempting this fix.
