What is a Blue Screen error?

The blue screen error is sometimes referred to ominously as the “Blue Screen of Death.” This error can happen out of nowhere. When it occurs, your computer will come to a forced stop and you see a blue screen. Your machine may shut down or restart on its own, or it may stay on the blue screen but give you no choice but to restart. When a blue screen error occurs, you will lose any data that was unsaved. In most cases, you will be able to restart your computer after the error.

Why do I see a Blue Screen error?

A blue screen error can be the result of hardware or software issues. For instance, if you install a software driver incorrectly, a blue screen error may occur. Likewise, adding a soundcard might result in a blue screen error. Whatever the cause, a blue screen error represents a serious problem in your computer that needs to be addressed.

How do I fix a Blue Screen error?

There are many different specific blue screen error codes. If you can get Internet access on the computer with the error code or another machine, write down your error code and do an Internet search to figure out the source of your error. If your blue screen error is tied to a software driver or other program, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver or software may resolve the issue. If you can’t figure out exactly what is causing the error, it’s best to treat the issue on a large scale. In some cases you will be able to open Windows normally, and in other cases you won’t be able to access Windows in normal mode after seeing a blue screen error.
# Option 1: If you can open Windows normally:
  1. Go the Windows Start menu enter System Restore into the search box. Choose the option that comes up under “Programs.”

  2. Wait for the System Restore program to open and then choose “Next” from the System Restore window.
  3. Click on one of the dates in the System Restore window. This will delete all new software updates and installations that were added between the current date and the date you choose. For instance, if you choose a date from two weeks ago, any updates that took place within the last two weeks will be reversed. You should choose a date that predates the time when the blue screen errors began.
  4. Choose “Next” and then “Finish” to start the system restore. Reboot your computer when it’s done.
  5. Click on the Windows Start menu and choose “Computer” from the menu. Right-click on the hard drive that you think initiated the error, and choose “Properties”.
  6. Go to the Tools tab, and then click “Check now” in the Error-checking box.
  7. Check the boxes next to both “Automatically fix file system errors” and “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.” This tells the program to check for both file errors and physical errors. Click “Start.”
#Option 2: If you can't start Windows normally:
If the blue screen error is the result of one of your startup programs, you may not be able to open Windows normally until the program is repaired.
  1. Initiate a reboot of your computer and hit the “F8” key before you see anything on your screen. Choose “Repair Your Computer” from the Advanced Options Menu. If you don’t see this option, your operating system doesn’t have any pre-installed repair tools. If that is the case, insert a Windows 7 Disc and click “Repair Your Computer” on the first menu screen.
