NEWARK- A man traveling with his daughter “showed symptoms of Ebola” prompting an investigation of the passengers and crew of United Flight 998 on Saturday. The passenger, who vomited on the plane, is believed to have been travelling from Liberia on a United Airlines flight from Brussels.
The Daily Mail reported the unnamed man and his daughter were “both removed from the plane by a CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] crew in full Hazmat attire.” Additionally, “CDC officials have rushed to Newark Liberty International Airport” to verify that the man was not contagious before allowing the passengers to leave the plane. It is not a stretch to imagine that this must have been a frightening experience for the passengers on board United Flight 998.
The local CBS affiliate reported,
After landing in Newark at around 12:15 p.m., authorities sealed the plane at Gate 54 and asked the 255 passengers and the plane’s crew to remain on board, the Port Authority said.
ABC News reported that an unnamed official said that there is “no clear indication at this point” that the passenger has Ebola.
One man on the flight tweeted:
United Airlines released a statement saying,
Upon arrival at Newark Airport from Brussels, medical professionals instructed that customers and crew of United flight 998 remain on board until they could assist an ill customer. We are working with authorities and will accommodate our customers as quickly as we can.
The news comes as the first Ebola patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, is now confirmed to be in critical condition, according to CNN.
