(NaturalNews) What if biotechnology was actually intended not to provide more food for the planet but rather to seize control of the global food supply for the purpose of using agriculture as a weapon? Biotechnology expert and BioEngineering News founder and editor Tom Mysiewicz makes the case for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as weapons of warfare by multinational corporations, providing scientific proof that this reckless technology is destroying both the earth and those who live on it.

Mysiewicz has been involved with the biotechnology movement since the beginning and was among the first journalists to cover its existence back in the early 1980s. His extensive understanding of how biotechnology works, as well as his many years of hands-on research experience in the field, makes his point of view on the issue both relevant and credible.

It is because of this that Mysiewicz's assessment is so sobering, as it unveils a covert killer within our midst that is being promoted as some kind of savior of humanity. Not only were GMOs, he says, approved based on lies, but the substantiation of their entire existence is predicated on deceit, faulty science and empty promises.

GMOs received 'grandfathered in' approval by FDA without adequate safety testing

It gets stated quite a bit, but the truth of the matter is that GMOs have never undergone the type of extensive safety testing typically required for new drugs or food additives. Back in the 1980s, before the first commercial GMOs hit the market, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agreed to "grandfather in" GMO approval apart from the law.

How GMOs and the chemicals used to grow them might affect human health was never regarded by these regulatory bodies as important enough to study. Large agribusiness interests merely presented ideals about GMOs, such as them eradicating world hunger and relieving the need for crop chemicals, as evidence for their approval -- and unfortunately, this approach worked.

Americans exposed to more chemicals than ever as a result of GMOs

Today, GM soy, corn, canola and other cash crops dominate American agriculture. And more pesticides and herbicides than ever are being doused on them to produce cheap food for the masses, food that, as it turns out, is tainted with poison. Since 1996 when the first GM crops were approved for commercial use, there has been a 527-million-pound increase in the use of herbicides like glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup formula.

"Americans are now ingesting much higher levels of the herbicide and have much higher blood-serum levels of glyphosate--this without adequate knowledge of the cumulative effects of such exposure," wrote Mysiewicz in his paper.

GMOs as vehicles of disease and death in humans

What about GM crops that have had microbes and other chemicals embedded into their genetic framework? Bt corn quickly comes to mind, as it contains Bt toxin engineered into its cellular structure. When consumed, this genetic monstrosity could lead to the perpetual production of Bt toxin within the digestive tract of humans.

"The problem here is that, whereas the BT microbe is sprayed onto crops and can be washed off by the consumer, the gene coding for the BT toxin is cloned into a food plant the consumer eats," explained Mysiewicz. "Just because the toxin is 'natural' (like the deadly ricin) does not mean it is not a poison--as evidenced by the fact that it kills bugs."
