President Barack Obama’s star-studded fundraiser tonight with actor George Clooney is expected to bring in $16 million, making it one of the most lucrative political money events ever, though far from No. 1.
The most profitable event remains the May 2000 event organized at the Verizon Center by veteran Democratic fundraiser Terry McAuliffe, a friend of former President Bill Clinton and a former Democratic National Committee chairman.
The most profitable event remains the May 2000 event organized at the Verizon Center by veteran Democratic fundraiser Terry McAuliffe, a friend of former President Bill Clinton and a former Democratic National Committee chairman. That event, which featured entertainment from Robin Williams, Stevie Wonder and Lenny Kravitz, raised $26.5 million for the party to spend to try to elect Al Gore as president. A month earlier, Texas Governor George W. Bush, who would go on to defeat Gore and win the White House, presided over a Republican National Committee event that raised $21.3 million.
Helping the political parties at the time was the ability to solicit large donations — the DNC gala asked for as much as $500,000 — known as “soft money.” Such contributions were banned by the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law enacted in 2002.
Obama’s event is also raising money for the Democratic National Committee as well as his re-election campaign. This time around, the party can’t take contributions of more than $30,800. The rest of the $40,000 admission price goes to the Obama campaign and state parties.
