United Nations Adopts Global Arms Trade Treaty

By United Press International April 2, 2013 12:49 pm

UNITED NATIONS -- The U.N. General Assembly passed a landmark international arms trafficking treaty tying weapons exports to potential human rights threats.

Among other things, the treaty prohibits countries from exporting conventional weapons in violation of arms embargoes, or weapons used to commit genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes or terrorism, the BBC said. It also requires countries to keep conventional weapons from entering the black market.

Iran, Syria and North Korea last week blocked an effort to approve the treaty by consensus and opponents said much of the language was too vague. Russia led a group of nations that abstained. The United States voted in favor of the measure despite pressure from the National Rifle Association, which opposed the treaty and said it would work to ensure it isn't ratified in the U.S. Senate.

However, with or without U.S. ratification, as soon as 50 countries approve the treaty it will become international law.

U.S. diplomats said much of what's in the legislation is in practice in the United States, where weapons companies are forbidden from selling to nations or groups likely to commit genocide.

Human rights advocates lauded the treaty's passage as a proactive step in preventing mass violence in the future.

"The Arms Trade Treaty provides a powerful alternative to the body bag approach currently used to respond to humanitarian crises," said Ray Offenheiser, the president of Oxfam America. "Today nations enact arms embargoes in response to humanitarian crises only after a mass loss of life. The treaty prohibits the weapon sales in the first place."

Diplomats have worked for nearly 10 years to reach agreement on principles to control the flow of such arms, the BBC said. Attempts to finalize the treaty last year collapsed after the United States, Russia and China, said they needed more time to consider the issues.

The treaty covers an estimated $70 billion trade in tanks, armored combat vehicles, large-caliber weapons, combat aircraft, attack helicopters, warships, missiles and launchers, small arms, light weapons and ammunition.

The treaty will take effect soon after 50 countries ratify it – but a lot will depend on which countries ratify and which don’t, and how stringently it is implemented.

According to The Hill, a majority of U.S. Senators called on the administration not to sign on to the treaty last month. Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association has also long opposed it, saying in an address to the UN’s Arms Trade Treaty Conference last July: “Neither the United Nations, nor any other foreign influence, has the authority to meddle with the freedoms guaranteed by our Bill of Rights.”

    read more:

“The treaty will not control the domestic use of weapons in any country, but it will require countries that ratify it to establish national regulations to control the transfer of conventional arms, parts and components and to regulate arms brokers.”

If anything past the first clause of this sentence is true, then the first clause of this sentence is false.

I can just hear the gun control and gun grabber spokesmen now… “we didn’t want to do this, but now we have to… not our fault, we told you all along we didn’t want this, we just do not have any choice in the matter…”

If you think you’ve seen panic purchases of guns and ammo, just give it a bit until this news goes around. This one even regulates parts.

…and the American Kristalnacht draws one step closer.

Obama supports an arms treaty to stop the flow of guns to terrorist. What about drug cartels, Benghazi, Egypt, Syria and his list goes on & on.

    Yep, One world gun control.

I wonder how long it will be before this country goes belly-up?

Then they can get on with a one world government ,so then they can fill all the congressional seats ,with a bunch of “foreign nationals”.

It sure would help the process along, if the whole world is unarmed so resistance would be futile.

Yep it’s all moving along like clock-work.

We need to look at the bigger picture here, yes they are trying to take out right away to own a gun and a means to protect ourselves. However, who is the largest exporter of guns and military equipment this treaty regulates….that would be the USA. This treaty would have a enormous impact on the USA and the money we get.

Plus, how many arms do we sell to Israel…..we all know it is only a matter of time before the UN says that Israel is “terrorizing” Palestian and the Middle East. So the UN will be able to kill 2 birds with 1 stone….the US and Israel. Think about it!

The UN will go after the US while turning a blind to all of the dictators and communist/socialist countries as they continue their march in taking over the world.
