For millions of conservative Christians, the signs that America is moving away from its moral roots have increased exponentially in recent years. Many feel it is only a matter of time until God withholds His favor from our country, as the Bible records He did in nations that willfully disregarded His commands.
Others, however, think that ship has already sailed.
During a prayer meeting this week commemorating the faith-based leadership of George Washington, rabbi and author Jonathan Cahn touched on exactly that painful subject.
He began by citing our first president’s remarks during his first inaugural address.
“The propitious smile of heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which heaven itself hath ordained,” he said.
Speaking to a crowd of legislators, government officials, and other prominent guests, Cahn touched on some uncomfortable truths about America’s deteriorating relationship with God.
“We stand tonight on Capitol Hill,” he continued, “in the city named after the one who gave that prophetic warning, to ask, can a nation drive out the name of God from its public square, and the Word of God from its schools, and the ways of God from its culture and still expect the smiles of God to shine upon it?”
Leftist policies continue to relegate God to houses of worship, while our founders recognized that freedom can only exist where people recognize the ultimate authority of a Higher Power. The current trend, Cahn explained, has brought about devastating policies that displease God.
“Can the blood of 50 million unborn children cry out to heaven from this land and the smiles of heaven still remain?” he asked.
He specifically addressed legislators and justices gathered for the event, encouraging them to pass and interpret laws in a manner congruent with God’s will. He then spoke directly to Barack Obama.
“Mr. President, can you place your left hand on the Word of God to assume your office and with your right hand sign laws which break the very Word upon which you swore and still expect the smiles of heaven to remain?” he asked.
The event, hosted by Rep. Michele Bachmann and emceed by former Gov. Mike Huckabee, also counted a number of other prominent conservatives and faith leaders among its attendees.
