Chechen leader, Putin pal vows to crush ISIS after threat against Russia

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, himself a Muslim, vows to destroy Islamic State fighters who threatened his land and ally Vladimir Putin. (Reuters)
The latest recipients of an Islamic State threat are responding in kind, with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov vowing that "these bastards" will be "destroyed."
Kadyrov, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, went on an Instagram rant after Islamic State posted a video threatening Putin over his support for Syria's Bashar al-Assad and vowing to liberate Chechnya. The Muslim strongman, who has fought Islamic militants in his backyard for years, seemed to take special umbrage at a threat aimed at his patron in Moscow.
"I state with full responsibility that the one who had the idea to express a threat to Russia and say the name of the president of the country Vladimir Putin, will be destroyed, where he did it," Kadyrov seethed. "I emphasize that they finish their days under the hot sun in Syria and Iraq, and in the first instant of death meet their eternal flames of Hell. Allahu Akbar!"
"I emphasize that they finish their days under the hot sun in Syria and Iraq, and in the first instant of death meet their eternal flames of Hell. Allahu Akbar!"- Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov
The video that incensed Kadyrov showed Islamic State fighters cavorting around Russian fighter planes sent to Assad by the Kremlin but seized when Islamic State overran Syria's Tabqa airport.
In the video, which was posted and translated by Middle East Media Research Institute, a fighter refers to Kadyrov as a Putin puppet. Kadyrov responded on Instagram by saying "these bastards have no relation to Islam," and vowing if they try to threaten Russia or Chechnya "you will be destroyed."
"I want to remind everyone who is planning something against our country, that Russia has worthy sons, ready to fulfill any order, wring the neck of any enemy in his own lair, wherever he may be," Kadyrov wrote. "And we find ourselves with happiness ridding the world of these scum."
The threat against Russia and Chechnya came as an Israel-based intelligence news service claimed that the Saudi, British and Australian governments have "credible information" that Islamic State and Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula have plans to launch a coordinated attack around the time of the Sept. 11 anniversary.
DEBKAfile reported that unnamed "counterterrorism sources" say the groups are preparing to hit in the Middle East and somewhere in western Europe. According to the site, the militants are holding off on planning an attack on the U.S. for now. ISIS operates in Iraq and Syria, while AQAP is based in Yemen.
The report comes after a second American journalist was executed by the Islamic State.
So far, U.S. officials have said they are not aware of any plots against the U.S. at this stage, though they have the potential to target the U.S. and Europe using western passport holders.
Matt Olsen, outgoing director of the National Counterterrorism Center, said Wednesday there is no indication of any Islamic State cells in the U.S., "full stop."
But he said the group poses a "multi-faceted threat to the United States."

JORDAN CALLS UPON INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO "PROTECT THE TEMPLE MOUNT AND ITS GATES"

This is just like saying that Washington, DC is off limits to ALL Americans! ONLY WORSE.
JORDAN CALLS UPON INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO "PROTECT THE TEMPLE MOUNT AND ITS GATES"
On Sunday Jordan called upon international organizations such as the UN, Unesco and the Security Council to take measures to prevent Israel from "causing damage to al Aqsa" (the Temple Mount).
The government of Jordan consistently objects to any Jewish presence on the Temple Mount and consistently calls upon International bodies to prevent Israel from creating any change in the current "status quo" on or around the Mount. The Muslim Waqf which has been entrusted with the daily administration of the Temple Mount is under the jurisdiction of Jordan. Over the past twenty years the Waqf has wantonly destroyed archaeological remnants of the first and second Temples and has engaged in an aggressive campaign denying the historical existence of the Holy Temple, claiming that the Temple Mount, (al Aqsa, as they call it), is an exclusively Muslim site from the beginning of time. Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994.
Israel is currently renovating the wooden ramp that leads from the Western Wall Plaza to the Mugrabi Gate entrance to the Temple Mount. The ramp and Mugrabi Gate are used exclusively by Jews and non-Muslim tourists, as it is the only gate through which non-Muslims are allowed access to the Temple Mount. Muslims have access to the Temple Mount via ten separate gates.
The wooden ramp leading to the Mugrabi Gate was originally built in 2007, following a 2004 earthquake and snow storm which caused the collapse of the earthen ramp which had been in use until then. The wooden ramp was intended to be a temporary solution. Plans were drawn up for a permanent ramp after painstaking archaeological exploration guaranteed that no archaeological remnants would be damaged.
When Israel announced the beginning of the construction of the new permanent ramp the government of Jordan called upon Israel to stop construction immediately and threatened regional violence if Israel proceeded with the work. Israel acquiesced and the temporary wooden ramp became permanent. Two years ago the city of Jerusalem condemned the wooden ramp declaring it unsafe.
Israel has recently begun constructing a new wooden ramp to replace the current ramp. The new ramp is being built alongside the old ramp. The ramp extends over an area that Israel has previously excavated and opened to the public. The new ramp does not threaten any of the archaeology in the area.
Photos show new wooden ramp under construction.

John Boehner: Obama 'sowed seeds' of current foreign policy crises

John Boehner: Obama 'sowed seeds' of current foreign policy crises

By |
House Speaker John Boehner was highly critical President Obama's foreign policy during an interview Tuesday, blaming the White House for sowing the seeds of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
The Ohio Republican, speaking to his colleague, Rep. John Campbell, R-Calif., who was guest-hosting Hugh Hewitt's conservative talk radio program, suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin never would have invaded Ukraine while George W. Bush was in the White House.
Boehner also said that Obama's failure to develop a strategy to confront and defeat ISIS was responsible for the gains made by the Islamic extremist movement.
The speaker signaled that the Republican-controlled House might need to act to grant Obama additional authority to act militarily against ISIS, but that that is dependent upon what, if any, strategy the president settles on.
Boehner spoke to Campbell by telephone on the tail end of a campaign-style bus tour that has taken him to more than a dozen states and House districts during Congress' summer recess. The interview came on the same day that Obama headed overseas for crucial meetings with world leaders on how to address crises in Ukraine and elsewhere.
Following is a partial transcript of Boehner's interview as provided by the Hewitt show:
On Russia's invasion of Ukraine: "The President and NATO need to make clear to Putin that we are not going to tolerate their continued incursions into Ukraine. Listen, the seeds of what we’re seeing today were sown by the president five years ago when he did his 'apology' tour, when he went to Europe and he went to the Middle East and apologized for America being strong and America leading. The world wants us to lead. And when he sent this signal, he sent the message out to all the goofballs around the world that if they wanted to go poach, it was fine with him. Now, does anybody think that Vladimir Putin would have gone into Crimea had George W. Bush been president?"
On the rise of ISIS: "I think, under existing authorizations from the Congress, he has the ability to do this in Iraq. It’s, I think it’s questionable whether he has the authority to do this in Syria. You know, the threat from ISIS goes back well over a year. And the crisis in Syria’s been going on now for over two years. And we’ve asked the president, asked the president, 'what is your strategy to deal with Syria?' And clearly, there’s no strategy that’s developed there. But when ISIS came across the Iraqi border in January, you know, I asked the question: 'Mr. President, where is the strategy to deal with the growing Islamic threat?' -- because it’s not just Syria, and it’s not just Iraq. This goes from Libya to Gaza to Lebanon to Syria and Iraq. All of these countries are basically under control of Islamic terrorists who are hellbent on killing Americans, as we saw once again today."
On seeking additional authorization from Congress: "The president has provided the notification of some of these strikes, even in Iraq, because there’s some ambiguity there in terms of how much authority in Iraq did he have. But if he’s going after ISIS, he would have, I think he would have to provide a war powers notification to the Congress. And then it would be up to the House to make a decision about whether we dealt with the issue or not ... I think it’s the president’s responsibility to outline to the American people how we’re going to deal with this problem. It is not going to go away. Its intent, their intent, is to kill Americans at home and abroad, and we either deal with this head-on and eliminate this threat, or continue to put Americans at risk."

Financed by American Tax Dollars, the OECD Endorses Obama’s Statist Agenda for the U.S. Economy

Financed by American Tax Dollars, the OECD Endorses Obama’s Statist Agenda for the U.S. Economy

I hate to sound like a broken record, but the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is once again pushing for bigger and more intrusive in the United States. The international bureaucracy’s “Economic Survey” of the United States reads like it was produced by some interns at the Democratic National Committee.
Since the OECD is based in Paris, I suppose it’s not very surprising that it has a statist agenda. But it’s still offensive because American taxpayers finance the biggest portion of the bureaucracy’s budget.
In other words, I’m subsidizing the people who are interfering with America’s domestic policy in hopes of making America more like France!
Moreover, the OECD’s transformation into a pro-statism organization is disappointing since, as I wrote back in 2011 when reviewing some academic analysis of the organization’s left-wing drift, “the OECD initially was designed to be a relatively innocuous bureaucracy that focused on statistics. Indeed, it was even viewed as a free-market counterpart to the Soviet Bloc’s Council for Mutual Economic Assistance.”
Yet today, the OECD behaves as if the West lost the Cold War.
But enough complaining on my part. Let’s look at what the OECD recommended in its Economic Survey.
We’ll start with the (sort of) good news. The bureaucrats actually recognize that America’s economy is suffering from a very anemic recovery and expansion (some of us have been making this point for years).
Here are a couple of charts from the report looking at economic output and employment. As you can see, even bureaucrats from Paris acknowledge that Obamanomics has generated dismal results.
Here’s the chart looking at GDP.

And here’s the chart looking at employment.

So did the bureaucrats look at these grim numbers and conclude that bigger government isn’t working?
Nope. They basically suggested that America should double down on statism.
I’m not joking. Here are some of the specific suggestions from the report.
The OECD suggested that the United States should “Cut the marginal corporate income statutory tax rate.” You might think that’s a pro-growth recommendation, but the bureaucracy simultaneously recommended that politicians “broaden the tax base, notably by phasing out tax allowances” and also advised them to “take measures to prevent base erosion and profit shifting.” In other words, the OECD embraced Obama’s rearrange-the-deck-chairs-on-the-Titanic proposal.
The OECD urged that politicians “Make the personal tax system more redistributive.” This is an astounding proposal given that the United States already has the most “progressive” tax system of all developed nations (primarily because we have much lower taxes on poor and middle-income taxpayers). The only silver lining to this black cloud is that the OECD wants to further penalize the rich “by restricting regressive income tax expenditures” rather than by raising tax rates. Maybe Francois Hollande gave them some advice on being merciful?
The OECD is a big fan of redistribution, so it’s not surprising to read that the bureaucracy suggests “expanding the ETIC,” regardless of all the fraud. But I confess that I’m surprised that the organization also endorsed “a higher minimum wage.” I understand that the organization see its role as being supportive of Obama, but you would think that the economists at the OECD would have enough self respect and human decency to block a proposal to harm poor people.
The OECD not only wants to make it hard for low-skilled people to get jobs, it also wants to encourage discrimination against younger women. At least that’s the only logical conclusion after reading that the bureaucrats embraced the White House’s scheme for “paid family leave nationally.” As you might imagine, businesses respond to incentives and will be less likely to higher women of childbearing age if the law makes them liable for paying workers who aren’t on the job.
The OECD unsurprisingly reiterates its support for Obama’s global-warming agenda, suggesting that U.S. politicians should be “putting a price on greenhouse gas emissions.” Translated from jargon, this would mean a big tax on energy consumption. And speaking of energy taxes, the bureaucrats also say that government in America should be “capturing some of the resource rent” of energy production. That’s another jargon-laden way of saying that politicians should make it more expensive for people to drive their cars and heat their homes (makes you wonder if they hacked the IMF computers to come up with those bad ideas).
The OECD also thinks the federal government should be more involved in raising kids. The report recommends “Expanding effective targeted interventions – such as Head Start, Early Head Start.” Apparently we’re supposed to applaud good intentions and ignore the fact that even government-sponsored research finds that these programs don’t benefit kids.
There are more bad policies, but this is getting repetitive, so let’s close with some additional charts from the report.
I think you’ll agree that the selection of material and the presentation of the charts (particularly the headings) make it obvious that the OECD is endorsing more statism.
After all, nobody likes their country to be “low” when compared to other nations.

And who want to have “fallen behind”?

And if “fallen behind” is bad, then “lags behind” may be even worse!

Sigh. In every case, the clear implication is that government should spend more and intervene more.
Gee, I guess I’m supposed to be embarrassed that the United States is “behind” all the wonderful and socially conscious European nations.
Except we’re not behind, at least when it comes to the data that really matter. Just click here, here, and here before deciding whether Americans should listen to the OECD and copy Europe’s welfare states.
P.S. Don’t forget that the OECD’s misguided analysis and recommendations were developed with your tax dollars. Sort of makes you wonder why GOPers don’t eliminate the handouts that facilitate such nonsense.
P.P.S. Just in case you wonder whether this report is an anomaly, here are a few other examples of OECD work.
*It has allied itself with the nutjobs from the so-called Occupy movement to push for bigger government and higher taxes in the United States.
*The bureaucrats are advocating higher business tax burdens, which would aggravate America’s competitive disadvantage.
*The OECD is pushing a “Multilateral Convention” that is designed to become something akin to a World Tax Organization, with the power to persecute nations with free-market tax policy.
*It supports Obama’s class-warfare agenda, publishing documents endorsing “higher marginal tax rates” so that the so-called rich “contribute their fair share.”
*The OECD advocates the value-added tax based on the absurd notion that increasing the burden of government is good for growth and employment.
*It even concocts dishonest poverty numbers to advocate more redistribution in the United States.

REAP WHAT YOU SOW: Steven Sotloff, Jewish grandson of Holocaust survivors with American-Israeli citizenship, held a “deep love for Islam”

24_08_2014_016_016_004Leftist Jew gets in bed with the mortal enemy of the Jews and suffers the consequences. Steven Sotloff spoke fluent Arabic and showed a deep love for the Islamic world, even while living in Israel. He is reported to have supported Hamas and the Syrian jihadist rebels before he was captured by ISIS militants in Syria in 2013 and beheaded by them yesterday.

According to various online reports, Sotloff’s journalistic style effectively gave aid and comfort to America’s enemies in Bahrain’s Shi’ite Hezbollah rebels, Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, Libya’s Al-Qaeda rebels, and finally ISIS. Sotloff had kept his Judaism a secret from his Islamist captors by pretending to be sick when he fasted for the Yom Kippur holiday.

UK Daily Mail (h/t Maria J)  Sotloff, 31, grew up in Miami with his mother Shirley – whose parents were both Holocaust survivors – and father Art before attending the Kimball Union Academy boarding school in New Hampshire from which he graduated in 2002.  He then studied journalism at the University of Central Florida but did not graduate.

Sofloff, who was born in Miami and was the grandson of two Holocaust survivors arrived in Israel in 2008 to become an undergraduate at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya according to the Times of Israel. However, he was apparently not a fan of the Israeli governments hardline approach to Palestine.

‘Like most of us, he came here and he became very critical of the government,’ said Hillary Lynne Glaser, who studied conflict resolution, international relations and counter-terrorism with Sotloff. ‘I’m not so sure it was about the Israeli-Arab conflict, I think it was more how they treat their own people. But he still came back to visit,’ she said. ‘He didn’t hate it enough to not come visit,’ she said. ‘He still considered it his home.’

After he graduated from the IDC, Sotloff freelanced for the Jerusalem Post and the Jerusalem Report and from there moved onto Foreign Policy and Time. His editor at the Jerusalem Report in 2011-12, Illene Prusher, called him fearless. ‘He was an excellent journalist, and he filed great work,’ she said to the Times of Israel.

‘He was our only guy who was filing from the region, and he was filing for a bunch of different places… In addition to covering Libya, he was covering Arab uprisings.

As a freelancer, Sotloff traveled the Arab world and eventually arrived in Syria in August, 2013. The Times of Israel said that they knew he was Jewish, but kept it secret in case his kidnappers found out. Sotloff wrote reports from Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Turkey and Syria.

‘A million people could have told him what he was doing was foolish, it seemed like it to us outsiders looking in, but to him it was what he loved to do and you weren’t going to stop him,’ said his friend, Emerson Lotzia. ‘Steve said it was scary over there. It was dangerous. It wasn’t safe to be over there. He knew it. He kept going back.’

Lotzia, now a Florida reporter, tweeted his horror after his friend’s execution: ‘Devastated and crushed. Steve was an amazing friend. Heart is heavy for his family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.’ Sotloff was ‘no war junkie’. He was ‘committed to the Arab Spring and very respectful of Islamic culture’.

Instead Of Monitoring ISIS, Obama Spied On Americans

Former Pentagon official reveals President has been given "granular" intelligence on rise of terror group for over a year
by Steve Watson | Infowars.com | September 3, 2014

The always insightful libertarian commentator Judge Andrew Napolitano had some choice words for the President Tuesday as it emerged that Obama has been receiving detailed security briefings on the rise of ISIS for over a year, but failed to formulate any strategy to deal with the terrorist group.
Appearing on Fox & Friends, Napolitano did not mince his words:
“The President is more concerned with wanting to know what Americans are doing, rather than dispatching our intelligence agencies to find out what people who really can cause us harm are doing.” he said, noting that the activity the NSA has undertaken “doesn’t keep us safe, it keeps us less free.”
“There are two disregards for the Constitution.” Napolitano added, explaining “One is spying on innocent Americans without any evidence of criminal activity… the other is failing to keep us safe by allowing an entity the size and the magnitude and the ferocity of ISIS to develop without any resistance.”
The claims that Obama has been getting “detailed and specific” intelligence about the rise of ISIS in his daily briefings for at least a year, comes from an anonymous former Pentagon official who claims to be fearful of the lack of action the administration has been taking on the matter.
“This is getting bad,” the source told Fox News, claiming that the White House had been repeatedly hesitant and, regarding the effort to rescue the now murdered US journalists at the hands of ISIS, continually asked for “the intelligence to build up more,” despite it being strong and “granular” in detail.
By Obama’s own admission, up until this week, there has been “no strategy” to deal with ISIS, an entity he personally dismissed in April, describing the group as the “jayvee” squad.
The fact that the President refuses to be briefed by advisors, and prefers to read the intelligence updates alone, has led some to question whether he has missed or skipped over vital information.
The Fox report reads “The former Pentagon official, who has knowledge of the process, said Obama generally was not known to come back to the intelligence community with further requests for information based on the daily report.”
Referring to the claims that the government has had detailed intelligence on ISIS for some time, Judge Napolitano said “Either they did or they didn’t, and if they did, they can’t claim surprise.”
“If they didn’t, it’s because they have dispatched 60,000 agents to spy on Americans in the United States of America, instead of on these monsters as they started to acquire more wealth and more of our former military equipment.” Napolitano urged.
“So for the government to say ‘oh, all of a sudden ISIS is here’, either the government is not doing its job, or the government is lying to us.” the judicial analyst concluded.

(Reuters) - The United Nations said $600 million (364.8 million British pounds) in supplies would be needed to fight West Africa's Ebola outbreak, as the death toll from the worst ever epidemic of the virus topped 1,900 and Guinea warned it had penetrated a new part of the country.
The pace of the infection has accelerated, and there were close to 400 deaths in the past week, officials said on Wednesday. It was first detected deep in the forests of southeastern Guinea in March.
The hemorrhagic fever has spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria, and Senegal, and has killed more people than all outbreaks since Ebola was first uncovered in 1976. There are no approved Ebola vaccines or treatments.
An experimental Ebola vaccine that Canada said it would give to the World Health Organization for use in Africa was as of Wednesday still in the lab that developed it as officials are puzzled over how to transport it.
Ottawa said on Aug. 12 that it would donate between 800 and 1,000 doses of the vaccine, being held at Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg.
"We are now working with the WHO to address complex regulatory, logistical and ethical issues so that the vaccine can be safely and ethically deployed as rapidly as possible," Health Canada spokesman Sean Upton said in a statement.
"For example, the logistics surrounding the safe delivery of the vaccine are complicated." Upton said one of the challenges was keeping the vaccine cool enough to remain potent.
Human safety trials are due to begin this week on a vaccine from GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK.L) and later this year on one from NewLink Genetics Corp (NLNK.O).
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said on Tuesday a federal contract worth up to $42.3 million would help accelerate testing of an experimental Ebola virus treatment being developed by privately held Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc.
Dr. David Nabarro, senior U.N. Coordinator for Ebola, said the cost of getting the supplies needed by West Africa countries to control the crisis would amount to $600 million. That was higher than an estimate of $490 million by the WHO last week.
Moving workers and supplies around the region has been made difficult by restrictions by some countries on air travel and landing rights as they try to control Ebola's spread.
"We are working intensively with those governments to encourage them to commit to the movement of people and planes and at the same time deal with anxieties about the possibility of infection," Nabarro said.
He said the president of Ghana has agreed to allow an airbridge, or route, through the country to affected regions to move people and supplies.
Ivory Coast, which closed its borders with Liberia and Guinea last month, said on Tuesday it would open humanitarian and economic corridors to its two western neighbours.
EPIDEMIC GAINS, EVACUATION EYED FOR DOCTOR
Dr. Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) told a press conference in Washington, "This Ebola epidemic is the longest, the most severe and the most complex we've ever seen."
Chan said there were more than 3,500 cases across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
In Liberia, Dr. Rick Sacra, a 51-year-old Boston physician infected with Ebola could be medically evacuated as soon as Thursday, according to staff at the hospital where he worked. Two other Americans recovered from the virus after being taken to the United States for treatment last month.
Amid shortages of equipment and trained staff, more than 120 healthcare workers have died in West Africa in the Ebola outbreak. The Liberian government has begun offering a $1,000 bonus to any healthcare workers who agreed to work in Ebola treatment facilities.
Guinea, the first country to detect the virus, previously said it was containing the outbreak but announced that nine new cases had been found in the prefecture of Kerouane, some 750 km (470 miles) southeast of the capital Conakry.
"There has been a new outbreak in Kerouane, but we have sent in a team to contain it," said Aboubacar Sikidi Diakité, head of Guinea's Ebola task force.
The latest outbreak started after the arrival of an infected person from neighbouring Liberia, and a total of 18 people were under observation in the region, the health ministry said.
Guinea has recorded 489 deaths and 749 Ebola cases as of Sept. 1, and the epicentre of the outbreak has shifted to neighbouring Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Guinean President Alpha Conde urged healthcare personnel to intensify efforts to avoid new infections. The disease is spread by physical contact with body fluids of infected people or contaminated articles, such as needles.
"Even for a simple malaria (case), you have to protect yourselves before consulting any sick person until the end of this epidemic," Conde said in a televised broadcast. "We had started to succeed, but you dropped the ball and here we go again."
The haemorrhagic fever was gaining in Nigeria where 18 cases, including 7 deaths, have been reported, three in the oil hub of Port Harcourt. The WHO warned that the outbreak there "has the potential to grow larger and spread faster than the one in Lagos" as containment measures had been less effective.
The fifth country infected was Senegal, which confirmed its first case last week: a student who slipped across the border from Guinea and made his way to the coastal capital Dakar.
More than 50 cases of Ebola have been reported in a remote northern jungle region of Democratic Republic of Congo, although these are not linked to the West African cases.
Since Ebola was first detected in Congo in 1976, WHO has reported more than 20 outbreaks in Africa and 1,590 victims.
The WHO warned last week that the Ebola epidemic in West Africa could infect more than 20,000 people and spread to 10 countries.
WORRIES VIRUS COULD MUTATE
Dr. Thomas Kenyon, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Centre for Global Health, said on Wednesday the outbreak was "spiralling out of control" and warned that the window of opportunity for controlling it was closing.
"Guinea did show that with action, they brought it partially under control. But unfortunately it is back on the increase now," he told a conference call. "It's not under control anywhere."
He warned that the longer the outbreak went uncontained, the greater the possibility the virus could mutate, making it more difficult to contain. While Ebola is transmitted in humans by contact with bodily fluids of the sick, suspected cases of airborne infection have been reported in monkeys in laboratories.
A senior U.S. official rebutted a call from global aid organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) for wealthy nations to deploy specialised biological disaster response teams to the region. MSF on Tuesday had warned that 800 more beds for Ebola patients were urgently needed in the Liberian capital Monrovia alone.
"I don't think at this point deploying biological incident response teams is exactly what's needed," said Gayle Smith, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Development and Democracy on the National Security Council.
She said the U.S. government was focussing on rapidly increasing the number of Ebola treatment centres in affected countries, providing protective equipment, and training local staff. "We will see a considerable ramp-up in the coming days and weeks. If we find it is still moving out of control, we will look at other options," Smith told a conference call.

The Obama Doctrine: Pretend to Give a Damn–Until You Don't Have To

The Obama Doctrine: Pretend to Give a Damn–Until You Don't Have To

For years, commentators have attempted to peg down just what the Obama Doctrine is. His allies have labeled the Obama Doctrine a form of realism about the limits of American power. His critics have labeled the Obama Doctrine “leading from behind.”

In 2009, President Obama came up with his own definition of an Obama Doctrine: “we're only one nation... the problems that we confront, whether it's drug cartels, climate change, terrorism, you name it, can't be solved just by one country.” But Obama has also, at certain points, claimed to champion unilateralism in the service of human rights and internationalism in the service of diplomacy.
The Obama Doctrine has been difficult to pin down because there does not seem to be a common thread uniting his disparate policies – muscular interventionism in Libya, pushy paternalism with regard to Israel, eager abdication with regard to Syria and Ukraine.
But with Obama’s latest decision to launch airstrikes against the Islamic State in the Levant (ISIL or ISIS), the Obama Doctrine has now come into focus: pretend to give a damn about suffering of innocents when it hits the headlines, ignore it the rest of the time.
Because Obama doesn’t truly care. At all. He is a master emotional manipulator, capable of achieving effective posturing when it comes to the suffering of innocents. That’s why the media constantly swoon at his “tone” and his “attitude” during his press conferences. They repeatedly praise his “anger” or his “determination.” But they rarely ask just what he’s doing to fight evil.
Any deployment of power will be short-term and ineffective. Obama will do all he can for innocents up until the moment when he doesn’t have to do so. Then he’ll leave them to die.
That was certainly the case in Egypt, where Obama expressed extraordinary optimism about the ouster of Hosni Mubarak, then promptly allowed the Muslim Brotherhood to take over. He has since spent efforts attempting to undercut the Egyptian military, which launched a popularly-supported coup against Mohamed Morsi.
It has been the case in Iran, where Obama belatedly denounced the treatment of democracy protesters, then did nothing as they were shot in the streets.
It has been the case in Ukraine, where Vladimir Putin has annexed Crimea and invaded eastern Ukraine. Obama has expressed outrage; Putin has scoffed, and his rebel forces have shot down a passenger airliner, to approximately zero effective action from the West.
It has been the case in Nigeria, where after expressing upset over Boko Haram’s kidnapping of innocent girls and ensuring that the State Department endorse the “power of hashtag,” the Obama administration has done precisely nothing.
It has been the case in Syria, where Obama assured the world that should dictator Bashar Assad cross a red line with use of weapons of mass destruction, there would be consequences. There were none. Assad, who Obama said should go, just signed onto another seven-year term. In sum total, the number of dead in Syria now approaches 200,000.
Now, Obama has done the same in Iraq. He will drop a few bombs. He will bluster. Then the world’s attention will turn to some other crisis, and Obama will blithely move on, leaving erstwhile allies to die.
This is no groundbreaking revelation. President Obama has always cared far more about appearances than realities. He bobs like a cork on the waves of crisis, skipping to and fro, always carefully attuning his public emotions to achieve the most sympathetic effect. If brief shows of force are necessary, Obama is unafraid to engage in them. But he is unwilling to make any commitment to taking the lasting action that actually effects change. To do that, he would have to lead rather than follow.
He would have to care.
Barack Obama is an emotional pro and a foreign policy dilettante. And that is an extraordinarily dangerous combination. Popularity is the Obama Doctrine. Ironically, the end result is massive unpopularity – it turns out that world events require prolonged and sustained action rather than posturing. More importantly, the end result is massive casualties.
