CAIR: Mich. Gun Shop to Stop Selling Targets with Muslim Garb

(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 2/7/2013) - The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today welcomed the decision of a metro Detroit gun shop to discontinue selling targets of a skeleton wearing traditional Muslim attire.

CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid met with the owner of Target Sports in Royal Oak, Mich., to voice concern that a gun range target that depicts a skeleton with a long beard dressed in a turban and robe may provoke gun owners to view local Muslims who wear such garb as enemies.

The owner gave Walid assurance that he will discontinue selling this particular target.

“We welcome the decision of Target Sports to discontinue selling such targets, which could have the effect of perpetuating misconceptions that Muslims, in particular those wearing certain attire, are to be viewed as a threat that should be eliminated,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.

Walid also raised concerns about how many other gun shops across the country who may be selling this particular target produced by the Ohio based Thompson Targets.
